NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANS[C] WORLDNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] US SECRETARY OF DEFENSE ARRIVES IN ATHENS THIS WEEKWeb Posted: 20:18 GMT+2Athens, 11/07/1999 (MPA) United States Secretary of Defense William Cohen is to conduct a working visit to Athens on July 13-14.Mr. Cohen, who will be accompanied by White House adviser Michael Sheen, is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Costas Simitis and the Ministers of National Defense and Foreign Affairs, Akis Tsochatzopoulos and George Papandreou, respectively. They are expected to discuss the latest developments in Kosovo and the Balkan reconstruction program. In an week-long tour beginning on Thursday, the Defense Secretary will visit Denmark, Norway, Hungary, Albania, Greece and Turkey before returning to Washington on July 15. A.F. [02] MAJORITY OF GREEKS APPROVE OF DEPORTATIONSWeb Posted: 20:18 GMT+2Athens, 11/07/1999 (MPA) The majority of Greeks approve of the deportation of illegal immigrants, according to an opinion poll published in Sunday's edition of daily Ethnos.Of those asked, 89.5 percent said they favored deportation, with 76.5 percent saying they believed most criminals were Albanian. Some 79. 2 percent said they believed more foot patrols by police would curb crime. Slightly more than half, or 59.4 percent, said they believed introducing a green card for immigrants to work legally in Greece was a positive measure, while 34.9 percent believed it was to the detriment of Greek workers. Yehia and Tsochatzopoulos are scheduled to have talks at the defense ministry, while on Tuesday, Mr. Yehia will meet with Parliament President Apostolos Kaklamanis and President of the Republic Costis Stephanopoulos. [04] GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER ARRIVES IN ATHENS TOMORROWWeb Posted: 20:18 GMT+2Athens, 11/07/1999 (MPA) German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer is to arrive in Athens tomorrow, to hold talks with Prime Minister Costas Simitis, Parliament President Apostolos Kaklamanis and Foreign Minister George Papandreou on Monday.According to a foreign ministry announcement, Balkan reconstruction, a long- expected Stability Pact, relations between the European Union and Turkey and the latest developments over the Cyprus issue will be the topics to be discussed. [05] RUSSIAN SHIPS TO SAIL IN THESSALONIKI PORT ON WEDNESDAYWeb Posted: 20:18 GMT+2Thessaloniki, 11/07/1999 (MPA) Two out of a total of five Russian ships transporting troops and facilities to the KFOR mission in Kosovo are expected to sail into Thessaloniki's port on Wednesday.According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the five ships are transporting 120 military vehicles and 400 officers. They will travel to Kosovo from Thessaloniki by car. A.F. [06] PREMIER ISSUES WARNINGS TO ALL DIRECTIONS DURING REJOINDERWeb Posted: 20:18 GMT+2Athens, 11/07/1999 (MPA) Prime Minister Costas Simitis, who is also the ruling PASOK party's president, issued stern warning towards all directions during his rejoinder address at the party's central committee meeting.He stressed that no party member has the right to be irresponsible and added that, during the 14 remaining months until the country's parliamentary elections. The party must work hard to combat the public's daily problems. Mr. Simitis said he does not plan to change policies presently being applied by the government, as demanded by several top party cadres after last month's European Parliament elections, where PASOK lost to the main opposition party New Democracy. Yesterday's session was the first central committee meeting after the Euroelections, and its main task was to assess election results and decide on a restructuring of the party. The Premier said the Euroelection result was a "useful lesson" on "certain aspects of government policy", but added that the government's legitimacy was not put in doubt by the result nor did it portend the results of next year's Parliamentary elections . [B] BALKANS[07] ARCHBISHOP SPYRIDON VISITS THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATEWeb Posted: 20:18 GMT+2Istanbul, 11/07/1999 (MPA) Following an invitation by His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of America, is presently on a visit to the Fanar where he will discuss the spiritual life and the general affairs of the Greek Orthodox Church in America.According to press reports, Mr. Spyridon could be removed from the post and replaced by the Archbishop of Australia, Stylianos. [C] WORLD[08] ARCHIMEDES' PALIMPSEST PRESENTLY EXHIBITED IN BALTIMOREWeb Posted: 20:18 GMT+2Baltimore, 11/07/1999 (MPA) The famous Archimedes' palimpsest will be exhibited in the city of Baltimore until September 5 where experts using the most advanced methods will try to decipher it.The 12th century AD palimpsest contains what is thought to be the only copy of a letter sent by ancient Greek mathematician and physicist Archimedes to astronomer Eratosthenes. The palimpsest was auctioned by Christie's in New York last October at $2.2 million. A.F.
