    [A] GREECE

    [01] THE FIRST RUSSIAN SHIPS WILL ARRIVE AT THE PORT OF THESSALONIKI ON WEDNESDAY

    Thessaloniki, 10/07/1999 (MPA) The two of the five Russian ships scheduled to sail into the port of Thessaloniki are expected to arrive on Wednesday.

    According to the Russian ministry of defense, the five Russian warships will carry a total of 120 military vehicles and 400 officers and soldiers.

    The Russian forces will leave for Kossovo with their own military trucks as soon as they disembark at the port of Thessaloniki.

    [02] THE US SECRETARY OF DEFENSE WILL BE IN ATHENS ON TUESDAY

    Athens, 10/07/1999 (MPA) US Secretary of defense William Cohen will be in Greece on Tuesday for contacts with the Greek government. He is scheduled to meet with prime minister Kostas Simitis, minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos, and foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou.

    The US Secretary of Defense will be in Greece until Wednesday and he is likely to visit Thessaloniki as well.

    [03] ANNA DIAMANTOPOULOU WAS GIVEN THE PORTFOLIO OF EMPLOYMENT

    Athens, 10/07/1999 (MPA) Ms. Anna Diamantopoulou takes over an important post in the new European Commission. New European Commission president Romano Prodi assigned to Ms. Diamantopoulou the portfolio of employment, social affairs and equality.

    Through the Social Fund Ms. Diamantopoulou will handle the sum of 60-70 billion Euro by the year 2006. Herself has stated that she regards her selection as an honor for her and the country given the fact that employment is one of the top priorities for the new European Commission president.

    [04] SIMITIS WILL BE IN TIRANA ON AUGUST 24

    Athens, 10/07/1999 (MPA) Greek prime minister Kostas Simitis will visit Tirana on August 24.

    Meanwhile, it was made known that the foreign ministers of Greece, Albania and FYROM will meet in Prespes next week.

    [05] OTE BOUGHT THE BULGARIAN STATE TELECOMMUNICATIONS ORGANIZATION

    Athens, 10/07/1999 (MPA) The Greek state Telecommunications Organization, OTE, bought 51% of the Bulgarian state telecommunications organization in a joint venture with the Dutch KPN.

    The OTE-KPN joint venture intends to invest 200 million dollars to the Bulgarian communications sector in the next 3 years. Based on the deal reached, OTE will take over the Bulgarian telephone network.

    [06] THE HEATWAVE CONTINUES IN GREECE

    Thessaloniki, 10/07/1999 (MPA) The state mechanism, the emergency aid services, hospitals, the air-conditioned municipal buildings are in a state of alert today as the temperature will go over 38 degrees Celsius.

    A heatwave is also expected in Cyprus today and tomorrow where the temperature will be over 40 degrees.

    Weather Bureau director Kleanthis Fileniotis stated that the phenomenon is the result of heavy pressures and warm air masses that affect central and eastern Mediterranean. The temperature will begin to drop on Tuesday.

    [07] PASOK'S CENTRAL COMMITTEE PROCEEDINGS CONTINUE

    Athens, 10/07/1999 (MPA) The proceedings of PASOK's central committee meeting continue at a central Athens hotel today.

    Prime minister Kostas Simitis in his speech yesterday referred to the need for PASOK's reorganization, saying that the movement should not be led to inactivity. Mr. Simitis gave an emphasis to the need for the solution of the everyday problems of the citizens, stressing that it is a challenge for PASOK to overturn the existing negative climate in the 15 remaining months of its term in government.

    [08] KOSOVO: 54 SERBS HAVE BEEN KILLED AND 36 WERE ABDUCTED

    Pristina, 10/07/1999 (MPA) At least 54 Serbs, all permanent residents of Kossovo, have been killed and 36 were abducted in the period from June 15 to July 9, according to facts provided by Bishop Artemios of Prizren and Raska.

    Specifically, in Pristina alone 14 Serbs have been killed, while 22 have disappeared and according to testimonies by other Serbs, they were abducted by ethnic Albanian rebels.

    In Pec, ethnic Albanian rebels have killed 10 Serb men and 2 women who are believed to have been raped. In the village of Slovovo, unidentified assailants tortured and killed all 4 members of a Serb family, while in Orahovac 2 Serbs were killed and 10 were abducted. Killings of Serbs were also reported in Obilic, Urosevac, Podujevo and other regions of the Serb province.
