    [01] SERIES OF TREMORS SHAKE THESSALONIKI WITHIN 15 HOURS

    Thessaloniki, 27/06/1999 (MPA) Five tremors were felt in Thessaloniki between last night and this afternoon, measuring from 3 to 3.6 on the Richter scale and whose epicenter was located in the Asvestochori region.

    Local earthquake experts are on standby albeit not overly concerned with the phenomena which have caused no damages.

    [02] FORMER GREEK DICTATOR PAPADOPOULOS DIES TODAY AT AGE 80

    Athens, 27/06/1999 (MPA) Greece's former dictator George Papadopoulos, who led a military junta from 1967 to 1973, died in an Athens hospital at 11:45 this morning, after a long bout with cancer. He was 80 years old.

    Mr. Papadopoulos was an army colonel when he seized power in an April 1967 coup. After the restoration of democracy in 1974, he was tried under the new civilian administration and sentenced to death for high treason, but the government commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.

    He was jailed in a special wing of Athens's maximum security prison but spent most of the last three years of his life hospitalized. His funeral will be held in Athens tomorrow.

    [03] MACEDONIA-THRACE MINISTER RETURNS FROM US, FATHER INJURED

    Thessaloniki, 27/06/1999 (MPA) The Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Yiannis Magriotis, who was due to arrive in the United States tomorrow morning for the annual convention of the US-Canada Macedonian Expatriates' Union, is returning to Thessaloniki today after his father was hit by a motorcycle last night and is presently hospitalized in critical condition.

    The 85-year-old Asterios Magriotis was on foot when he was hit by a motorcycle driven by a 17-year-old without a license.

    [04] UN CHIEF ASKS GREECE TO PARTICIPATE IN KOSOVO ADVISORY GROUP

    Athens, 27/06/1999 (MPA) United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, in a letter addressed to Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou, has invited Greece to participate in the first session of an advisory group created under the title of "Friends of the Secretary General for Kosovo".

    The group is set to convene at the foreign ministers' level in New York on June 30.

    Mr. Papandreou has reportedly accepted the invitation and will attend the session. Apart from Greece, the group will comprise Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Russia, Turkey, Britain, the United States, as well as the European Union, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe

    (OSCE) and the Islamic Conference Organization.

    [05] GREEK DEFENSE MINISTER ON OFFICIAL VISIT TO IRAN TOMORROW

    Athens, 27/06/1999 (MPA) Greece's Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos is to arrive in Tehran tomorrow on an official visit, the first to Iran by a European Union defense minister since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA.

    Mr. Tsochatzopoulos has been invited by his Iranian counterpart, Vice- Admiral Ali Shamkhani. During his four-day visit, Mr. Tsochatzopoulos is expected to have talks with the leadership of Iran's armed forces.

    [06] CUTBACKS IN OVERSEAS FLIGHTS AND STAFF ADVISED FOR OLYMPIC

    Athens, 27/06/1999 (MPA) A study conducted by independent consultants Avmark SA, advises cutbacks in overseas flights, cancellation of new aircraft purchases and trimming staff sizes, all for the sake of saving the national airline Olympic Airways.

    The report also stressed that O.A. should become affiliated and cooperate with an international corporation of airlines, if wants to render itself as a competitive firm.

    Meanwhile, O.A. staff have decided to mobilize against the decision to sell a controlling stake of the company to a subsidiary firm of British Airways and will conduct a 24-hour strike on Thursday.

    [07] TURKEY:OCALAN VERDICT COULD BE ANNOUNCED ON TUESDAY

    Ankara, 27/06/1999 (MPA) A Turkish court could rule on Tuesday in the treason and sedition trial of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.

    Although the three-judge panel is considered likely to ask for the death penalty, international pressure is mounting on Turkey not to resort to capital punishment.

    Turkish President Suleiman Demirel has stated that even if the death penalty should be handed, it does not mean it will be carried out.

    [08] GREEK PREMIER IN RIO DE JANEIRO FOR EU-LATIN AMERICA SUMMIT

    Rio de Janeiro, 27/06/1999 (MPA) Greece's Prime Minister Costas Simitis is presently in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which will host the European Union- Latin America summit conference on June 28-29.

    Mr. Simitis was in Argentina where he attended the Socialist International Conference and had the opportunity to meet with his Italian and Albanian counterparts, Massimo d'Alema and Panteli Majko, respectively with whom he discussed the latest developments in Kosovo.
