    [01] HOSPITAL DOCTORS TO EMBARK ON FIVE-DAY STRIKE TOMORROW

    Thessaloniki, 07/02/1999 (MPA) Hospital doctors throughout the country are escalating their mobilizations, demanding back pay for 24-hour emergency shifts.

    In Thessaloniki, they have announced they will embark on a five-day strike as of Monday, February 8, and will perform their emergency duties.

    They have also stated that they are determined to claim their due wages through the courts.

    [02] CYPRIOT DEFENSE MINISTER TO VISIT ATHENS TOMORROW

    Athens, 07/02/1999 (MPA) Cyprus's Defense Minister Yiannakis Chryssostomos will embark on a four-day visit to Athens tomorrow where he will be received by his Greek counterpart Akis Tsochatzopoulos.

    Their talks are expected to focus on the transport and installation of the Russian S-300 missiles on the island of Crete.

    [03] GREEK FARMERS TAKE TRACTORS TO THE STREETS TOMORROW

    Thessaloniki, 07/02/1999 (MPA) The country's farmers will take to the streets with their tractors tomorrow, after the Agriculture Minister George Anomeritis failed to meet their demands.

    Mr. Anomeritis forwarded a letter of reply to the Pan-Thessaly Farmers' Coordinating Committee yesterday, outlining the government's positions on farmers' demands, meeting some of them while rejecting others.

    Mainly, farmers are demanding lower debt repayment rates.

    [04] PRESIDENT OF HELLENIC REPUBLIC TO VISIT AUSTRIA THIS MONTH

    Vienna, 07/02/1999 (MPA) The President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos will conduct an official visit to Austria between February 15 and 17, this being the first visit by a Greek head of state to the Austrian capital.

    President Stephanopoulos will be accompanied by Alternate Foreign Minister George Papandreou and National Economy Deputy Minister Alekos Baltas.

    Mr. Stephanopoulos will hold talks with his Austrian counterpart Thomas Klestil, and Chancellor Viktor Klima, while he will also meet Austrian parliament president Heinz Fischer.

    [05] TALKS CONTINUE IN RAMBOUILLET OVER KOSOVO

    PARIS, 07/02/1999 (MPA) Urging them to choose life over death, France's president Jacques Chirac

    opened the negotiations between Serbs and ethnic Albanians at a 14th century chateau in this town south of Paris.

    ``There are times when history is in the hands of a few men,'' Mr. Chirac said. ``That is the case today. When you leave Rambouillet, a page in Europe's history will have been turned. I exhort you to let the forces of life overcome the forces of death.''

    ``The world is watching,'' the French leader said. ``The world is waiting.''

    Nevertheless, the Serb delegation is still refusing to let representatives from the Kosovo Liberation Army (UCK) to attend the negotiations.

    [06] GREEK YOUTH ABROAD CONFERENCE IN ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT

    Alexandria, 07/02/1999 (MPA) The Patriarch of Alexandria and All of Africa Petros saluted the proceedings of the founding conference held by the Greek youth of Asia-Africa, presently held in Alexandria, Egypt.

    The Patriarch urged the young people to focus and develop their level of expertise and stressed that in the present age of technology and computers man cannot replace other humans for the sake of material gain.

    The conference was also saluted by the President of the cross-party parliamentary committee Grigoris Niotis, who also relayed a salutation by the President of the Hellenic Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis, as well as a number of deputies, the secretary-general of Greeks Abroad Stavros Labrinides and the President of the Council of Greeks Abroad Andrew Athens.
