    [01] SANTER WILL BE IN GREECE IN APRIL

    Athens, 06.02.1999 (MPA) European Commission president Jacques Santer will visit Greece on April 21-22 to be declared professor emeritus in Pantion University in Athens.

    During his stay in Greece he will attend conferences on the European developments and he will address an event organized by the representatives of the European Commission in Greece.

    [02] THE FARMERS THREATEN WITH STREET BLOCKADES

    Athens, 06.02.1999 (MPA) Farmers threaten to block the national road network starting on Monday, stressing in the statement they have issued that the minister of agriculture did not undertake any commitments aimed at meeting their demands.

    Mr. Anomeritis stressed that the issue will be discussed before the end of the month, while the settlement of the farmers' debts will be discussed in the ministry of national economy and finance on Wednesday in the presence of Bank of Agriculture representatives.

    [03] INFLATION IN JANUARY WAS 3.7%

    Athens, 06.02.1999 (MPA) Inflation dropped in January to 3.7% from 3.9% in December. The government's economic staff expects a new drop in March at about 3%. The government's goal is for inflation to reach 2% by the end of the year in order for the country to meet the criteria for the EMU.

    US president Bill Clinton used positive comments for the effort made by prime minister Kostas Simitis in the economic sector in the meeting he had with undersecretary Giorgos Paschalidis who is on a visit to the United States.

    [04] PANGALOS WILL VISIT BOSNIA, CROATIA AND FRY

    Athens, 06.02.1999 (MPA) Greek foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos will be on a visit to Bosnia, Croatia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia tomorrow until Wednesday.

    Mr. Pangalos will have contacts with his counterparts and with other government officials.

    [05] THE PEACE TALKS ON KOSOVO START TODAY

    Paris, 06.02.1999 (MPA) The peace talks on Kossovo start in Rambouillet, France today. In the talks will participate a Serb delegation, Kossovo's ethnic Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova and representatives of Kossovo's Liberation Army.

    If the talks fail NATO is prepared to bomb military targets in Yugoslavia, stated head of the alliance's defense planning committee German general Klaus Naumann.

    [06] KARAMANLIS WAS ELECTED VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN POPULAR PARTY

    Brussels, 06.02.1999 (MPA) Right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis was elected one of the vice-presidents of the European Popular Party.

    Mr. Karamanlis addressed yesterday the European Popular Party conference in Brussels where the European Christian-democrats prepare a common action plan for the Euro-parliament elections in June.
