    [01] PROTESTING FARMERS TOUGHEN THEIR STANCE

    Thessaloniki, February 15 (MPA)

    The coordinating committees of the region's farmers convened this afternoon in order to decided on their stance after the recently-held fruitless meeting with Agriculture Minister Stephanos Tzoumakas.

    Meanwhile , Thessaloniki remains cut-off from Athens, as the farmers have placed road blocks at the national highway.

    Government spokesperson Dimitris Reppas stated that the government is determined not to allow the farmers to "take hostage" the country.

    [02] ELECTIONS UNDERWAY AT MAIN OPOSITON PARTY

    For the second consecutive day, elections for the prefectural committees are underway at the country's main opposition party New Democracy

    Meanwhile, prompted by the recent expulsions of dissenting party deputies by the party leader Kostas Karamanlis, N.D.'s former president Miltiades Evert stated that he is opposed to these expulsions and attributed them to Mr. Karamanlis's personal ambitions. Mr. Evert also stated that the expunged deputies should not proceed to the formation of another faction.

    [03] THE RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER ARRIVES IN ATHENS TODAY

    Athens February 15 (MPA)

    Russian foreign minister Gevgeni Primakov arrived in Athens this afternoon for a formal visit that will last until February 18.

    The Russian minister will be received by the Greek president this evening , while he will meet with prime minister Kostas Simitis, parliament president Apostolos Kaklamanis and main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis.

    Tomorrow, Mr. Primakov will have talks with his Greek counterpart Theodoros Pangalos with the participation of high-ranking ministry officials from both sides.

    The talks with Mr. Primakov will concern issues such as, the situation in Iraq and the Middle East, the situation in the Balkans, the Cyprus problem and the Greek-Turkish relations.

    [04] SECOND ROUND OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN CYPRUS TODAY

    Nicosia February 15 (MPA)

    Incumbent president Glafkos Clerides and former foreign minister Giorgos Iakovou are the two candidates vying for the presidency in the second round of voting held in Cyprus today.

    According to the latest polls, Mr. Clerides is ahead by 50.8%, while Mr. Iakovou has gathered 49.19%.

    Cypriot socialist party, EDEK, leader Vasos Lyssarides called on his party's supporters to vote by conscience, while the rest of the presidential candidates, who did not manage to gather enough votes in the first round of the elections last Sunday, have expressed their support to Mr. Clerides.

    It is expected to be a tough battle, as in the first round of the presidential elections, Mr. Iakovou got 40,6% and 160.918 votes while Mr. Clerides got 40,06% and 158.763 votes.
