Meanwhile, their colleagues, who are members of the federation of northern Greek associations, will continue the dialogue today with minister of agriculture Stefanos Tzoumakas and undersecretary of national economy and finance Giorgos Dris. On Monday, Mr. Primakov will have talks with his Greek counterpart Theodoros Pangalos with the participation of high-ranking ministry officials from both sides. The talks with Primakov will concern issues such as, the situation in Iraq and the Middle East, the situation in the Balkans, the Cyprus problem and the Greek-Turkish relations. [04] RAMIZ ALIA WAS ADMITTED TO PAPANIKOLAOU HOSPITAL TO UNDERGO HEART SURGERYWeb Posted: 16:00 GMT+2Thessaloniki 14 February (MPA)Former Albanian president Ramiz Alia arrived in Thessaloniki late last night and was taken to Papanikolaou Hospital where he will undergo a heart surgery that will be performed by world known Greek heart surgeon Panagiotis Spyrou.The 73yearold Alia will first undergo the necessary medical tests and immediately afterwards he will be operated on as his health condition is characterised as especially serious after the heart problems he had about two months ago. Mr. Alia, who was released from prison during the popular uprising in Albania last March, was examined recently in Tirana by Mr. Spyrou, who concluded that he should undergo an open heart surgery. The former Albanian president arrived in Thessaloniki to be operated on as the hospitals in his country do not have the necessary medical equipment for such an operation. [B] WORLD[05] CLERIDES-IAKOVOU ARE THE TWO CANDIDATES IN TOMORROW'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN CYPRUSWeb Posted: 16:00 GMT+2Nicosia 14 February (MPA)Incumbent president Glafkos Clerides and former foreign minister Giorgos Iakovou will run for the presidency in the second round of voting that will be held in Cyprus tomorrow.Cypriot socialist party, EDEK, leader Vasos Lyssarides called on his party's supporters to vote by conscience, while the rest of the presidential candidates, who did not manage to gather enough votes in the first round of the elections last Sunday, have expressed their support to Mr. Clerides. In the first round of the presidential elections, Mr. Iakovou got 40,6% and 160.918 votes while Mr. Clerides got 40,06% and 158.763 votes. [06] THE EFFORTS FOR THE SOLUTION OF THE CYPRUS PROBLEM WILL CONTINUE AFTER THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONSWeb Posted: 16:00 GMT+2Nicosia 14 February (MPA)The United States' intention to intensify their efforts for the solution of the Cyprus problem immediately after the presidential elections in Cyprus, was confirmed by US State Department spokesman James Rubin.Mr. Rubin clarified the statement made by US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, according to which, the US are pressuring Turkey to contribute more to the effort for the solution of the Cyprus problem, by saying that the UN sponsored negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem are expected to resume soon after the presidential elections in Cyprus. He also mentioned that the US had talks with the United Nations concerning the time of the visit of UN and US officials to Cyprus, while he added that the US have continued their efforts in the past few weeks aimed at creating the necessary climate for successful talks. [07] PETAR STOYANOV: IRAQ SHOULD RESPECT THE UN RESOLUTIONSWeb Posted: 16:00 GMT+2Sofia 14 February (MPA)Iraq should respect the UN resolutions, stated Bulgarian president Petar Stoyanov upon his arrival at the Sofia Airport after completing his visit to the United States.Mr. Stoyanov stated that Bulgaria wants Iraq to comply because the UN resolutions should be respected and also because Bulgaria will not be able to take back the money owed to it by Baghdad if Iraq does not respect the UN decisions. The Bulgarian state radio reported that the Bulgarian foreign ministry will issue a formal statement on the matter in the next few days.
