The 73yearold Alia will first undergo the necessary medical tests and immediately afterwards he will be operated on as his health condition is characterised as especially serious after the heart problems he had about two months ago.

Mr. Alia, who was released from prison during the popular uprising in Albania last March, was examined recently in Tirana by Mr. Spyrou, who concluded that he should undergo an open heart surgery.

The former Albanian president arrived in Thessaloniki to be operated on as the hospitals in his country do not have the necessary medical equipment for such an operation.
