[01] PASOK EXECUTIVE BUREAU CONVENES TOMORROW ON MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

The Executive Bureau Greece's ruling party PASOK is to convene tomorrow,
in light of the imminent municipal elections throughout the country.
Following tomorrow's session, the officials are expected to announce the
names of the mayoral candidates it will support in the municipalities of
Thessaloniki, Athens and Piraeus. According to reports, the candidates
likely to be chosen by PASOK are Thrasyvoulos Lazarides for Thessaloniki,
Maria Damanaki for Athens and Christos Fotiou for Piraeus.

The President of Greece's main opposition party, New Democracy's Kostas
Karamanlis is optimistic that his party will win the country's next general
elections.
In an interview to a Sunday paper, Mr. Karamanlis criticized the ruling
party for its policies and said that PASOK's efforts of modernization is a
myth that has begun to crumble.

Greece's Minister of National Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos stated that the
decision of Turkey's Supreme Court to outlaw the Islamic Welfare Party is
proof that this country has a long way to go until it becomes a democratic
institution.
Welfare Party leader and former prime minister Necmetin Erbakan and other
5 party members lost their seats in Turkey's National Assembly. Mr. Erbakan
stated that he intends to seek recourse through the European Commission for
Human Rights.
The decision hurts the faith to the democratic principles, commented
Washington.
