    Thessaloniki 17 January (MPA)

Eighty years after his birth in Thessaloniki Panos Dimitriou, one of the historic leaders of the Greek Communist movement, a member of the Communist Party leadership in the period 1956-1968 and one of the protagonists in its break up in 1968, sheds light on some of the less known periods in the course of the Communist Party with his book "Ek Vatheon".

Besides the examination of certain ideological and unavoidably personal differences that arose within the Communist Party as a result of the defeat in the Greek civil war and the prevalence of Stalinism in its ranks, Panos Dimitriou's experiences as a member of the Greek Communist Party leadership is of specific interest regarding the relations with the Soviets and the Communist parties in other countries. For example, he mentions in his book the dispute he had in 1961 with the then Albanian prime minister Mehmet Sehou when he went to Tirana to attend the 4th Conference of the Albanian Workers' Party as a representative of the Greek Communist Party.

Sehou accused him publicly of being an agent acting on behalf of imperialism and fascism when Dimitriou refused to accept the accusation expressed by Emver Hodza that a visit of Sofoklis Venizelos to Nikita Krutsev in Moscow was made in preparation of the military invasion of Albania by the imperialist, the Greek monarchist and fascist forces.

In response, the delegation headed by Panos Dimitriou left the conference and a short time afterwards Sehou was executed by Hotza ironically accused of being "a foreign agent".
