NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANSNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] GREECE'S FOREIGN UNDERSECRETARY RECEIVES LIBYAN COUNTERPART IN ATHENSWeb Posted: 19:31 GMT+2Athens, August 10 (MPA)Greece's Foreign Undersecretary Yiannos Kranidiotis met with his Libyan counterpart Abdelati el Obeidi in Athens yesterday, where the two men discuss the forthcoming meeting of the joint Greece-Libya committee for bilateral cooperation.Following the talks, Mr. Kranidiotis stated that a Libyan committee is to visit Greece in September in order to explore possibilities for closer cooperation in the economic, transport and trade sectors. Mr. el Obeidi stated that he briefed Mr. Kranidiotis on the difficulties faced by his country after the sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council, following the Lockerbie incident in 1988, when 270 persons where killed in a bombing of a Pan Am airliner over Scotland. A lengthy international investigation had concluded that Libya was behind that attack. Moreover, the Libyan Minister stressed that his country "is supportive of Cyprus' independence, the freedom of its territory and the special role it can play in the region." . A.F. [05] CLERIDES AND DENKTASH TO MEET IN MONTREUX, SWITZERLAND, TOMORROWWeb Posted: 19:31 GMT+2Montreux, August 10 (MPA)The President of Cyprus Glafkos Clerides has departed for Switzerland's Montreux, accompanied by his advisers, in order to attend tomorrow's direct talks with the leader s of the Turkish-Cypriots Rauf Denktash tomorrow.Mr. Clerides has reiterated that the Greek-Cypriot side is approaching the talks with a sense of good will, in order to discuss the basic issues of the Cypriot problem. Mr.Denktash once again threatened that he will not engage in the talks if Cyprus continues with its process of accession to the European Union. Mr. Denktash is to be accompanied by various "officials" from his "state", as well as Turkish constitutional law expert Mumtaz Soizal and Turkey's deputy undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Inal Batu. According to diplomatic circles, Greece is to be represented its new Ambassador to Cyprus Kyriakos Rodousakis and his predecessor, Alexandros Sandis. A.F. [06] UN'S GUSTAV FEISHEL COMMENTS ON DIRECT TALKS IN MONTREUXWeb Posted: 19:31 GMT+2Larnaca, August 10 (MPA)The deputy special representative to Cyprus of the United Nations Secretary General Gustav Feishel stated today that the international community awaits from both sides of Cyprus to display their full commitment to the peacekeeping process for a comprehensive solution and to work hard, on this premise, for reaching this target.While avoiding to make any predictions on the outcome of the round of talks set to begin tomorrow between the President of Cyprus of Glafkos Clerides and the leader of the Turkish-Cypriots Rauf Denkash, Mr. Feishel stated that it would be highly significant if the two leaders "arrive at a common position on as to how they should proceed from now on. When asked to comment on the recently-signed integration pact between Turkey and the regime ruling Cyprus's occupied part, Mr. Feishel stated that it does not aid in the talks. A.F.
