    [01] PANAGIOTOPOULOS CAME FIFTH IN THE 200M FINAL

    The performance of the Greek athletes in the 6th IAAF World Championships in Athens continues to be exceptional. Giorgos Panagiotopoulos came 5th in the 200m final, while Christos Meletoglou with a 17.12 jump, which is a new Greek record, occupied the 7th place in the triple jump final.

    Unfortunately, Niki Bakoyianni did not qualify for the high jump final. Today, Niki Xanthou fights for a medal in the long jump final and Mirela Maniani-Tzelili in the javelin.

    [02] THE LIBYAN GOVERNMENT AGREED TO PAY HALF OF THE DEBTS OWED TO GREEK CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES

    The Libyan government agreed to pay half of the money owed to Greek construction companies.

    Specifically, the government of Libya agreed to pay to Greek businessmen an estimated 240 million dollar debt, corresponding to about 50% of the 420 million dollars claimed by the Greek companies.

    The way payments will be made will be determined in September.

    [03] GREEK DELEGATION IS ON A VISIT TO MUNICIPALITIES IN SOUTHERN BULGARIA

    A Greek delegation, headed by the President of the city of Dramas Chamber of Commerce mr.Konstantinos Gribas, is on a working visit to the municipalities of Gotse Deltsev, Bansko and Razlog in southern Bulgaria, aimed at the promotion of the official opening of the activities of the Nestos-Mesta Association in September.

    The association was founded having as an objective the economic, cultural and social development of the wider border region of Greece and Bulgaria.

    [04] THE US REACT TO THE UNIFICATION AGREEMENT BETWEEN TURKEY AND THE TURKISH-CYPRIOT REGIME

    The United States and Germany are opposed to the association agreement signed between Turkey and the Turkish-Cypriot regime, while Greece and Cyprus have already protested to international organizations.

    In Washington, a White House representative stated that the agreement is not a positive development because it weakens the negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

    [05] THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF FRY WILL BE IN ATHENS ON MONDAY

    Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Foreign Minister Milan Miludinovic will be in Athens on Monday at the invitation of his Greek counterpart Theodoros Pangalos.

    During his visit to Athens, mr.Miludinovic will meet with the Greek political leadership.

    Belgrade 9 August (MPA)

    US mediator Richard Holbrooke met in Belgrade last night with Federal Republic of Yugoslavia President Slobodan Milosevic.

    Their discussions focused on the peace agreement in Bosnia, while Holbrooke mentioned to Milosevic that he should show greater responsibility in fulfiling his obligations based on the Dayton peace accord.

    [07] THE NEW CLERIDES-DENKTASH MEETING WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY

    The new meeting of Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides with Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will be held in Montreaux, Switzerland on Monday.

    UN Secretary General envoy Gustav Feisel stated that the United Nations expect that the two leaders will reach a common position and added that the partial integration of the Turkish occupied territories into Turkey does not help in the process to find a solution to the problem.

    US Secretary of State Madleine Albright announced that US envoy Richard Holbrooke will be in Cyprus for one week each month and added that the long- drawn dispute over Cyprus is in the phase of finding a solution within the framework of Cyprus' accession into the European Union.
