    [01] GREEK PARLIAMENT TO EXAMINE COURSE OF STATE'S ECONOMY

    Athens, May 18 (MPA)

    The Greek Parliament will examine the course of the state's economy and the current year's first results, during its session tomorrow.

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis is expected to illustrate the economy's positive trend, especially the drop in inflation and reduction of public deficit, in essense two of the most critical points that will determine Greece's entrance into the Economic Monetary Union.

    [02] BELGIUM'S NATIONAL BANK: GREECE'S EMU PROGRESS IS NOTEWORTHY

    Brussels, May 18 (MPA)

    Most of the Euroepan Union's member-states are in better economic form than what was expected from them, stated the governor of Belgium's National Bank Alfons Verplaetse, who aslo stated that the indications for Greece and Italy are quite positive, two countries which -as he stated- were considered to be the EU"s "black sheep".

    He added that while Greece was late for two years in applying the measures necesary to achieve convergence with the Economic Monetary Union, it has achieved noteworthy progress in relation to the expectations.

    Mr. Verplaetse stated that Greece's budget will stand in 1998 at the same level where Belgium's was in 1996.

    [03] MINSTER OF ENVIRONMENT, PUBLIC WORKS, CITY PLANNING ON EGNATIA ROAD

    Thessaloniki, May 18 (MPA)

    Greece's Minister of Environment, City Planning and Public Works Kostas Laliotis stated today the the mammoth-project Egnatia road will be completed by the year 2000.

    Mr. Laliotis pointed out that the state will secure the necessary funds for its completion through gradual toll increases, a loan from the European Bank and other sources.

    Thessaloniki today honored Greece's famous composer Mikis Theodorakis, during an event held at the city's Aristotle University.

    The event was prompted by the recent publication of the book "Theodorakis, the politician", written by Pavlos Petrides who is a professor of law and also the Macedonian Press Agency's President.

    [05] GREEK OFFICERS PARTICIPATE IN BULGARIA-HELD NATO EXERCISE

    Sofia, May 18 (MPA)

    Officers and experts from eight counries are participating in NATO's exercise "Eagle of Peace '97", curently held at Bulgaria's Military Academy.

    The exercise, to be completed on May 22, features participants from Greece, the United States, Turkey, Romania, Italy, FYROM, Albania and Bulgaria.

    According to Bulgaria's Defense Minister Georgi Ananief, the exercise is held within the framework of NATO's initiative "Cooperation for Peace" and is expected to aid in Bulgaria's accession to the European and north- Atlantic structures.

    [06] ALBANIA: OPPOSITION PARTIES CONTINUE TO THREATEN BOYCOTT OF ELECTIONS

    Tirana, May 18 (MPA)

    Albania's opposition parties continue to react to the new election law recently voted in their country's parliament, which is overwhelmingly in favor of President Sali Berisha's Democratic Party.

    The opposition threatens to boycott the elections scheduled for June 29 if the President insists on his positions.

    Meanwhile, Mr. Berisha has already embarked on his pre-election campaign, currently at the small town of Laci, 30 kilometers north from Tirana.

    At the same time, the United States and other countries in Western Europe have expressed their concern over the mounting reactions.
