    [01] GREECE'S HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS MAY CONTINUE STRIKE FOR NINTH WEEK

    The Greek high school teachers' national union OLME is to decide whether or not to extend their strike for a ninth consecutive week.

    Four parents of students who are not able to keep up with their studies because of the strike, have sought recourse at an Athens court where they ask that the strike be declared illegal. Their claim will be heard on Wednesday.

    Shrove Monday was celebrated in Greece today, marking the day before the beginning of the Christian period of Lent and, as tradition calls for it, Greeks escaped into the countryside and unswirled their kites into the sky.

    In Thessaloniki, a series of events are being sponsored by the "Thessaloniki: Cultural Capital of Europe 1997" organization.

    [03] ALBANIA: BERISHA, OPPOSITION MEET TO FORM NATIONAL RECONCILIATION GOVERNMENT

    Albanian President Sali Berisha and opposition parties representatives are currently holding a meeting in an effort to form a government of national reconciliation.

    Mr. Berisha yesterday announced to the Albanian peoples the agreement reached between the presidency and the opposition and also announced that parliamentary elections will be held by June.

    Meanwhile, the armed civilians in southern Albania have claimed this development as being their "first victory" but they did not say whether or not they will turn in their guns.

    As part of his European tour, Cypriot Foreign Minister Alekos Michaelides is to meet with his German counterpart Klaus Kinkel today.

    With stops in six European cities, Mr. Michaelides is to wrap up his tour with a visIt at the Hague tomorrow where he will meet with Dutch Foreign Minister and current president of the European Union's Ministerial Council Hans Van Mierlo.

    [05] GREEK HUMANITARIAN AID BUS TO BULGARIA STOLEN IN ASPARUJOVO

    A Greek bus, part of a Greek humanitarian aid convoy to Bulgaria, was stolen on Saturday night from the Bulgarian city of Asparujovo.

    The disappeared bus was destined for the city of Varna, headed by a delegation from Greece's city of Kiato, among them Kiato's Mayor George Yiannopoulos.

    The Bulgarian daily "Trud" reported on the event with a first-page article, where it wrote that perhaps the Bulgarian authorities should advise those who send aid to Bulgaria to do so with air drops.

    Meanwhile, the Greek municipality of Kavala has sent four-and-a-half tonnes of frozen sardines to Sofia, where they will be distributed to the city's poorest citizens. Also, the Greek Armed forces have forwarded large amounts of humanitarian aid to Bulgaria.

    [06] U.S. ECONOMIST WARNS BULGARIA: BE CAREFUL IN NEGOTIATIONS WITH IMF

    Bulgaria must be vary careful on the way it plans to conduct its negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, otherwise it may regret such talks two to three months later, according to American economist Jeffrey Sacks who is also an economic adviser to Bulgarian President Petar Stoyanov.

    Mr. Sacks warned that the formation of a currency board without the backing of a healthy and vital financial system and stable exchange reserves, "constitutes murder."

    The United States oil company "AMOCO" has returned to the Bulgarian market, a mere six months after it announced its decision to withdraw from this Balkan country.

    According to Bulgarian press reports, the oil company just inaugurated a mall in Plovdiv, an investment that has reached the million-dollar mark.

    Bulgaria and Russia have decided to draw a common plan for the transport of Russian natural gas through the Bulgarian state, after a meeting held today between Bulgaria's Vice-President Alexander Bozkov and a Russian delegation headed by Russia's Vice-President Oleg Lobov.

    Moreover, it was announced that Russia will undertake the modernization process of Kozlodui's electrical energy plant's first through fourth nuclear reactors.

    The installation of the new Patriarch of Alexandria and All of Africa, Petros was held today in Alexandria.

    Present at the ceremony were the President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Glafkos Clerides, and a score of church dignitaries and politicians from both Greece and Cyprus.

    Patriarch Petros comes from Dikomos in Cyprus and is a relative of General Secretary of the Cypriot Communist Party, AKEL, Dimitris Christofias. The ceremony was

    [10] 24TH INTERNATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF YOUTH EUROPARLIAMENT IN THESSALONIKI

    Thessaloniki, March 10 (MPA)

    The European Parliament of Youth officially opened its 24th International Assembly today in Thessaloniki, where about 230 young persons from 22 European countries met at the Aristotle University and exchanged views on their concerns of today.

    Officiating the ceremony was the president of the European Parliament of Youth Bettina Carr-Allinson, while Thessaloniki Mayor Konstantinos Kosmopoulos also gave a brief address. The President of the Assembly Kyriakos Hatzaras relayed a message by Greece's President Kostis Stephanopoulos while Greek Euro-deputy Nikos Papakyriazis relayed a message from the President of the European Parliament.

    During the following two days, the delegates are to be divided into 15 committees which will address issues concerning the European citizen, the EU's foreign relations and the security and cooperation of European peoples.
