Yesterday, four parents of students who are not able to keep up with their studies because of the strike, sought recourse at an Athens court where they asked that the strike be declared illegal.

    Tirana, March 8 (MPA)

Greece's Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannos Kranidiotis is currently in Tirana where he will meet with Albanian President Sali Berisha later this afternoon. Also in Tirana is a delegation from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), headed by Austria's former chancellor Franz Vranitski.

According to the French Press Agency, OSCE officials have said that the Albanian president will be willing to declare early elections within the following 45 days in Albania if the rioters turn in their guns first.

[04] ALBANIAN RIOTERS DEMAND THAT THE MILITARY TROOPS WITHDRAW

    Web Posted: 15:01 GMT+2

    Tirana, March 8 (MPA)

The rioters in southern Albania are not keen of the agreement reached between President Sali Berisha and the country's opposition.

Instead, they demand that Mr. Berisha resign, the military troops withdraw from the areas surrounding Avlona and early elections be held on a specified date. They say that once these demands are met, they will then turn in their guns.

Albanian former military officers are said to be heading these rebel groups and are also said to be trying to bring in more civilians and assign a sense of order.

    New York, March 8 (MPA)

The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has forwarded a message to women all over the world, in recognition of today's celebration of International Day of the Woman.

"This is a day when all of the world's women bridge the national, cultural, economic and political differences in order to unite and celebrate their common struggles for equality, development and peace," Mr. Annan states, adding that "although women are absent from peace talks, they contribute to preventive diplomacy and the creation of peacekeeping processes."
