Exit polls in German gave Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian
Democrats and their Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union,
a considerable lead over her Social Democratic challenger. With the
CDU-CSU and Free Democrats on a combined tally of 48.5 percent, Merkel
probably has enough support to ditch the Social Democrats and form a
new coalition, ARD television said.
