  • [01] Kilometre Charging on Athens-Lamia National Motorway

    Greece announced the introduction of a national system of kilometre charging on the Athens-Lamia national motorway, starting on coming Tuesday. Travelling on the Athens-Lamia motorway alle retour will now cost 4 euros more, while travelling to Halkida and back will cost about 2 euros less. The toll station in Schimatari will close down and a new one will be established near the city of Thebes.

    The charge per kilometer will be set at 00,37 euros, meaning that drivers will be paying 1.85 euros at the Afidnes toll station, 2.25 euros at the new toll station in Thebes and 2.2 euros at the Tragana toll station.

    Motorbike drivers will be paying 1.3, 1.6 and 1.5 euros respectively.

    Heavy rainfalls and gusty winds are affecting southern Italy. Roads were turned into rivers and houses flooded. The spate of bad weather left at least 11 dead in its wake. In the state of Georgia, a vehicle fell into a huge hope caused on the road because of the heavy rains. In the Philippines, tropical storm Ketsana claimed more than 75 lives, while as many as 280,000 people were forced to flee their houses.

    [03] Roman Polanski Seized in Switzerland

    Oscar-winning film director Roman Polanski was arrested upon his arrival in Switzerland after travelling to collect an award at the Zurich film festival, the Zurich police said.

    It was an arrest warrant stemming from a decades-old sex charge that forced the Swiss authorities to seize him. He had been on the run since 1978 after admitting that he had a sexual intercourse with a13-year-old girl. He fled the USA before he could be sentenced.

    Born in Poland and being a French citizen, Polanski reached prominence with his movie "Rosemary's Baby," while it was āThe Pianistā that earned him the Oscar award.
