In an interview with Ta Nea Newspaper, PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) President George Papandreou stresses the need for the total management of the crisis on behalf of the EU, proposing the adoption of the British model of purchasing bank shares by the state. He argues that with the intervention of the state the real economy will be invigorated, adding that the time has come for a new social deal among the state, employees and healthy entrepreneurship. He believes that a political change has already taken place within citizens. As for PASOKs cooperation with SYN (Coalition of the Left), he said his party expects a wider cooperation with progressive parties.

Mr Papadreou points out that PASOK is ready to take over, advising all, including employees and social partners to agree on mutual commitments so that Greece moves ahead.

He adds the EU should manage the world financial crisis, blaming the present government for the crisis in Greece.

He accuses the ND party aims at creating insecurity and fear within civilians to win the elections again. In parallel, it does not rule out cooperation with other progressive parties, but rules out any cooperation with the ND party.

[02] Crisis to Hit Low-Income Earners and Middle Class

    11 Οκτ 2008 13:43:00

    Sources: ΝΕΤ, ΝΕΤ 105.8

At a Press Conference held for the 18th conference of the party, KKE (Communist Party of Greece) Secretary General Aleka Papariga did not rule out an early crisis that would hit employees and the middle class

She pointed out that that crisis would be irrelevant to the global one, as capital had been invested in the Balkans instead of Greece. As a result she said that Greece would have been hit first by the crisis, but now due to the global crisis it will be hit earlier.

Regarding other parties proposals for the exodus from the crisis, she said that those who have "pay the bill" should be the Banks as they are responsible for their "investments."

Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin abused her power as Alaskas governor and violated state ethics law by trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police, a state investigators report concluded Friday. Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegans refusal to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten from the state police force was "likely a contributing factor" to Monegans July dismissal, but Palin had the authority as governor to fire him, the report by former Anchorage prosecutor Stephen Branchflower states.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy inaugurated Saturday a memorial complex dedicated to former French President Charles de Gaulle in his hometown Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, some 120 km SE of Paris, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the meeting held between de Gaulle with the then West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. The historic meeting between the two leaders was part of a reconciliation process between France and Germany after the end of WWII, a process which was viewed as the cornerstone of the restoration of political order in postwar Europe.

Merkel and Sarkozy also touched on Europes response to the financial crisis, which will run high on the agenda of tomorrows emergency meeting of the Eurozone member states.
