Thessaloniki will play a leading part in the common efforts of the people of SE Europe for prosperity and progress, stressed the PM while speaking to the regions cultural ministers at the Northern Greek city. Karamanlis noted that the Greeces strategic aim is the European prospect of the people of SE Europe, as it is the only way leading to stability. Earlier the PM had met with Thessaloniki Prefect Panagiotis Psomiadis, who asked for the Governments support in solving a series of accumulated problems in the area.

    Support for Thessaloniki

Psomiadis declared that the PM responded better than expected, noting that his claims were heard.

"The PM responded to my cry for help and my demands for Thessaloniki. I do not play hide and seek. We did not use any models, neither the Swedish, not the Irish. I used the model for claims, the Psomiadis model. We were justified, but the struggle continues and the claims will continue," declared Psomiadis.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Macedonia-Thrace, Giorgos Kalantzis, as well as Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis.

A new strong quake, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, was recorded 15 minutes after midnight on the island of Zakynthos. As the Athens Observatory Geodynamics Institute, the epicenter was located 240km west, southwest of Athens, at the same location south of Zakynthos where the previous strong earthquakes originated, and at a depth of 40 km.

The seismologists monitoring the phenomenon speak of an expected development in the post-seismic activity. Although they appear reserved as to the future, they are noting that the aftershock demonstrates that seismic activity in the Ionian region is on the decline.
