  • [01] Northern Greece, Macedonia and Thessaloniki Orbiting Around the Future

    15 Apr 2006 12:07:00

    By Mary Lou Tzempelikou

In statements after Saturday's meeting at the Macedonia-Thrace Ministry, where he was briefed on the course of major works in progress in the area, Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis voiced his belief that Thessaloniki and Northern Greece are orbiting around the future. "The citizens of Macedonia and Thrace are familiar with the situation we were faced with a couple of years ago. The problems which were created and accumulated because of the then governmental belief," said the Prime Minister and added the current Government's belief is that the way to a powerful state is through a powerful regional Greece. Mr Karamanlis also referred to the "major infrastructure works in Northern Greece," stressing they will be completed within binding timeframes. The Greek PM also met for a few minutes with a group of employees at the Phosphoric Fertilisers Industries SA and visited the new Town Hall, which is under construction.

[02] Articles about the Defence Secretary Rumsfeld Knew

    15 Apr 2006 20:25:00

    By Tina Valaoura

Sources: ANA - MPA - Reuters - BBC

US President George Bush has chosen to act as a shield against the mounting waves of criticism targeting US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his involvement in the Iraqi invasion. "Secretary Rumsfelds energetic and steady leadership is exactly what is needed at this critical period. He has my full support and deepest appreciation," was mentioned in the statement issued yesterday by the US President. A little earlier, Rumsfeld had clarified to his accusers who were asking for his resignation that he will not be giving in. "I respect their views but obviously if, out of thousands and thousands of admirals and generals, if every time two or three people disagreed we changed the Secretary of Defence of the United States, it would be like a merry-go-round," he said.

However, the story posted Saturday on online magazine Salon has created a new merry-go-round. As per the article, the Defence Minister was aware of the progress of the interrogation of a "high-value" detainee who was allegedly a member of the al-Qaeda. In 2002 and 2003, the Saudi Arabian suffered from what Army investigators have called "degrading and abusive" treatment in Guntanamo, Cuba, by soldiers who were following the interrogation plan Rumsfeld had approved. Pentagons spokesperson described the article, which cited an internal document of the US Army, as fictional.

    Interrogation Methods Had Been Approved

The story posted on Salon was entitled "What Rumsfeld Knew". According to the article, the Secretary reportedly held regular talks with Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller during the interrogation of detainee Mohamed al-Qahtani, a Saudi Arabian who was allegedly going to take part in the hijackings prior to the 9/11 attacks. According to Salon, for 54 days in 2002, al-Qahtani was accused of being homosexual, forced to wear womens underwear, stand naked in front of a female interrogator and perform "dog tricks" on a leash. The Army document cited in the article is a 391-page report obtained through the organisation Freedom of Information Act.

The online magazine included a sworn statement given to the inspector general by Lieutenant General Randall Schmidt, who mentioned that Rumsfeld had been "personally involved in the interrogation of one person." In his statement, Schmidt also said that Rumsfeld did not specifically authorise the "creative" tactics, but that the vagueness of his instructions had allowed the abuses to occur.

The Pentagon refuted the article, but confirmed that during his interrogation, al-Qahtani gave information about Osama bin Ladens health and the methods he uses to escape capture.

The organisation Human Rights Watch asked the Bush administration to investigate the case, accused Rumsfeld of "personal involvement" in the interrogations and said he was "criminally responsible" for the tortures suffered by al-Qahtani.

    By Mary Lou Tzempelikou

Easter shopping hours will apply from Holy Monday to Maundy Thursday around Greece and stores will be operating from 09:00am to 09:00pm on all four days. Stores on Good Friday will remain open from 13:00 to 19:00 and from 09:00 to 16:00 on Holy Saturday. Stores will not be operating on Easter Monday. Meanwhile, market inspections continue at an intensive pace to better protect consumers. On Saturday, Athens-Piraeus Prefect Fofi Gennimata visited Varvakeios market. "We have shielded the market and the battle for quality has been won."

Prices in Varvakeios market range from 9 to 11 euros per kilo for Greek lambs and kids, from 6 to 8 euros for imported meat, while local butchershops sell at 11 euros per kilo.

Varvakeios market President Kleanthis Tsironis reassured prices will remain fixed until Easter Saturday, while greengrocers advise consumers to buy seasonal vegetables, like lettuce and cabbage.

A meeting was held on Friday at the Development Ministry to coordinate and increase market inspections.

[04] PASOK President Tours Ilia Criticism by Papandreou

    15 Apr 2006 21:45:00

    By Tina Valaoura

    Sources: NET 105.8

PASOK President George Papandreou harshly criticised the Government the PM while speaking at an event Saturday night in Pyrgos, Ilia, which he is touring this weekend. "Mr Karamanlis did not respect the order given to him by the Greek people. He was saying other things before the elections and did other things after the elections," said the President of PASOK, accusing Kostas Karamanlis of being unable to face the Greek people with honesty.

George Papandreou also criticised the fact that the PM did not include Central Macedonia in his tour of Northern Greece, "because he could not face the unemployed and the people who have been dismissed in Veria and Naoussa."

He also added that New Democracy tricked the people with their so-called pledges and so-called programme to govern the country, while he stressed that PASOK will not allow the country to go downhill. Finally, he declared that PASOK will win the next elections.

Speaking from Preveza, PASOK secretary Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou accused ND of abandoning regional Greece.

On Sunday, George Papandreou is scheduled to visit the Community of Chavari, Municipality of Amaliada, to meet and talk with the locals.

    Sources: NET Radio 105.8

Easter will be celebrated with clean streets in Greece as in the early Saturday morning hours and after a marathon meeting, POE-OTA (Panhellenic Federation of Workers Associations of the Local Government) trade unionists decided to end their long-lasting strike. Dozens of tonnes of garbage are being collected around Greece and should be completed in the coming three days. Friday's meeting between POE-OTA trade unionists and Interior Ministry Secretary General Thanasis Vezyrgiannis had bore no fruit, because the employees asked for a monthly benefit of 60 euros but KEDKE (Central Union of Municipalities and Communities of Greece) rejected their demand as mayors are unable to uplift the cost.

[07] Battle Over Tsipouro Nemea Retsina and Wine Registered

    15 Apr 2006 00:00:00

    By Betty Savourdou

The registration of Greek retsina and wine from Nemea as products with protected designation of origin with the EU's official labelling in the USA is an unquestionable success. Meanwhile, Greeks are struggling in the European Parliament to also register tsipouro as a product with protected designation of origin. Back in 1988, there were some efforts to register tsipouro, but they were fruitless. However, the Greek delegation is very optimistic this time. So, Greek beverages will become popular around the world without being altered in any way.
