    A mainly fine and mild day is forecast, with some local cloudy patches in the western and northern parts of the country.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 10 to 20 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 8 to 16 degrees.

    [02] Public pays tribute to Polytechnic uprising

    Hundreds of people have visited the Athens Polytechnic University to pay tribute to the students who lost their lives during an uprising against the seven-year military dictatorship. Tomorrow, the gates will open at 9am and close at 3pm, for the ceremony honouring the students and the subsequent annual march to the American Embassy.

    Speaking in Thessaloniki today, Pasok deputy and former Public Order minister Stelios Papathemelis announced his departure from the ruling party. Government spokesman Christos Protopappas described the move as unavoidable, stressing that Papathemelis had already publicly expressed views diverging politically from Pasok

    [04] Pasok can ensure fair future for all says party secretary

    Pasok can provide a future that ensure a fair deal for everyone, with the elimination of unemployment and poverty, the ruling party's secretary Michalis Chrysohoidis said today, in a speech in Ioannina. He also expressed the conviction that the main opposition New Democracy party would lose the upcoming general elections in spring.

    The secretary of the New Democracy party's parliamentary group, Dimitris Sioufas, today slammed the government's economic policy. He accused the government of attempting to mislead the Greek people, by concealing deficits, the public debt and unemployment.

    [06] 5.3-Richter earthquake off Cephalonia island

    A strong earthquake, measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale was reported early this morning, in the sea region north-west of the island of Cephalonia. Seismologist Gerasimos Houliaras linked the quake with a seismic tremor in Lefkada, underlining that seismologists were carefully monitoring the phenomenon.

    [07] 5 injured in traffic accident on Athens-Lamia highway

    Five people ' including two children ' were seriously injured today in a traffic accident on the Athens-Lamia national highway, at the Kamena Vourla junction. The accident occurred when a vehicle ran a red light and crashed into an oncoming automobile.

    Suicide bombers, driving two vans loaded with explosives, carried out the devastating attacks on two Constantinople synagogues, which killed at least 23 people, a diplomatic source said today.
