    [02] At least 20 people killed in Constantinople synagogue attacks

    At least 20 people were killed and over 250 injured today, when car bombers shattered two synagogues in Constantinople, as worshippers celebrated the Sabbath. Governments and organizations throughout the world condemned the attacks and Israel said it was confident that Turkey would find those responsible.

    [03] Greece strongly condemns Constantinople attacks

    Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and the main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis sent telegrams of condolences to Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, while Press Minister Christos Protopappas and Foreign Minister George Papandreou expressed the Greek government's strong condemnation of the attacks.

    [04] Polytechnic celebrations begin

    The Athens Polytechnic University opened its gates to the public this morning for a 3-day celebration of the 30th anniversary of the students' uprising against the 7-year military dictatorship, which subsequently led to its fall. The facility will remain open over the weekend, from 9am to 9pm. On Monday, the gates will close at 3pm, for the main event, to be followed by the annual march to the American Embassy.

    [05] Pasok will participate in presidential election says PM

    Addressing a cabinet meeting yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis emphasized that the ruling Pasok party will participate in the election of a President of the Greek Republic in 2005, irrespective of its position at that time. At the same time, he expressed the conviction that Pasok will win the upcoming general elections next spring.

    [06] ND leader slams new electoral law

    Main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis today slammed the government's proposed new electoral law, which was approved by cabinet yesterday. He said it showed a regime mentality and accused the government of resorting to diversional tactics to take the public's attention away from real problems. Karamanlis also reiterated his challenge to the Prime Minister for a live televised pre-election debate.

    [07] Turkish PM in occupied sector of Cyprus for celebrations

    Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is currently visiting the occupied sector of Cyprus to attend celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the declaration of the self-styled Turkish-Cypriot state, which is recognized only by Ankara. According to Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, Erdogan will not announce a new initiative in the long-standing Cyprus dispute.

    Two US helicopters crashed today in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, coming down in a residential area, after apparently colliding, according to witnesses and local security officials.

    [09] 12 die in cruise ship accident

    Twelve people died today, when a dockside gangway to the world's biggest and most expensive cruise ship, the Queen Mary 2, collapsed at Saint-Nazaire in western France. Another 32 people ' all of them visitors ' were injured, 12 of them seriously.
