[03] Hamas founder hurt in Israeli air-strike, Palestinian PM resigns

Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas submitted his resignation today in a power struggle with Yasser Arafat, dealing a possibly fatal setback for a U.S.-backed plan for peace with Israel. It was not clear whether the resignation would be accepted by Arafat, who is wary of being blamed for a collapse of peacemaking and of Israeli threats to expel him. Hours after the resignation, Israeli forces fired a missile into a house in Gaza City in an apparent bid to kill the spiritual leader of the biggest Palestinian militant movement Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, who was slightly wounded. Hamas members said the wheelchair-bound Yassin, co-founder of the Islamic faction, received hospital treatment after being slightly wounded in the hand and shoulder. Palestinian medics said 14 other people were wounded.

In the meantime, Greek Foreign Minister, Giorgos Papandreou underlined with emphasis the need to implement the "Road Map" with the continuation of the peace process and avoiding any further violence in the region. Mr. Papandreou spoke about the EU's initiatives and noted that the "Quartet" would meet once again to discuss the Middle East crisis.

[04] PM Simitis underlines elections in 2004

Elections will be held in Greece in the spring of 2004, stated Prime Minister Kostas Simitis speaking in a luncheon with government and party leading officials in Thessaloniki at noon today.

Mr. Simitis stressed that until then a lot need to be done, adding that the government has completed many projects and there are more to be presented. He added that the governing Socialist Party of PASOK will have to give its battle with self-confidence and determination.

With respect to the main opposition party of New Democracy, Mr. Simitis stated that it will not leave the battle without a fight and will use every means to create a grim atmosphere. Within this framework, it will exploit groups of workers that have unwise demands, underlined the Prime Minister.

[05] Karamanlis calls for elections from Halkida

The President of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis called for elections during a speech in Halkida yesterday while during a speech this morning at the Evoia Chamber of Commerce, he stressed that the measures announced by Mr. Simitis are in no way a redistribution of wealth. Mr. Karamanlis characteristically stated the greatest redistribution of wealth that has been carried out in Greece during all PASOK's tenure were the 88.041.085 euro that were lost in the stock market.

[06] Car bomb kills 7 wounds 37 in Kashmir

A car-bomb aimed at an army convoy killed at least seven people and wounded 37 wounded at a fruit market in Kashmir, where a surge of recent violence is threatening peace moves between India and Pakistan. The Pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen group claimed responsibility for the blast. Police said a senior army officer and five soldiers were among the wounded in the explosion in Kashmir's main city, Srinagar. They said an army convoy, which was passing through the highway near the market, was the target of the blast.

[07] US says security in Iraq up to Iraqis

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said today it was up to Iraqis and not the American-led occupiers to control violence unleashed since the fall of Saddam Hussein. Earlier, Rumsfeld lauded what he said was the "wonderful start" to rebuilding Iraq when he addressed U.S. and Polish soldiers among the ruins of the ancient city of Babylon, even as guerrillas attacked his troops and protesters marched for jobs.

Rumsfeld's comments, at the end of a three-day tour of Iraq, were intended to stem mounting criticism of U.S. forces for failing to control lawlessness and prevent a string of car bombs which have killed more than 120 people in the last month. He challenged Iraqis to provide more information on militants in their midst, described by Washington as Saddam loyalists aided by foreign Islamic extremists.

[08] U.S. urges Europe not to block passenger info plan

The United States urged Europe today not to block a plan to pool data on air passengers, a proposal Washington says will help fight terrorism but which has raised privacy concerns. Last week, the European Commission rejected U.S. demands for airlines to reveal passenger information, saying Washington had failed to give binding commitments that personal data could not be abused in ways that might break EU privacy laws.

[09] Anti-euro activists rally in Sweden

Protesters from both the far right and left demonstrated against Sweden's proposed entry into the euro zone today -- one week before a referendum on the currency. Police detained about 50 leftists who tried to storm an anti-euro meeting of the right-wing Nationaldemokraterna party in Sodertalje, about 40 km south of Stockholm.
