    [02] "Revolutionary Struggle" claims responsibility for 2 bombs

    An unknown group, calling itself "Revolutionary Struggle," has claimed responsibility for two bomb blasts late last night outside the Athens courthouse complex, which injured a police officer. A man, identifying himself as a member of the group, called a local newspaper to warn of the explosions, which occurred when the courts were closed

    [03] EU to probe Greek plans for new Olympic airline

    The European Commission gave Athens an ultimatum today, to prove it was not breaking EU state aid rules in setting up a new streamlined version of its ailing national airline, Olympic Airways. The EU's executive arm has to judge whether the plan to carve out a smaller, more profitable air carrier complies with European regulations, which prevent governments from bailing out their airlines.

    [04] Former IOC president praises Olympic Games preparations

    The former president of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch ' who is currently visiting Greece to present his new book ' today praised the preparations for the Athens Olympic Games next year and, in particular the work of the president of its organising committee, Yanna Angelopoulou. He expressed the conviction that the Athens games will be the best in Olympic history.

    [05] US sailor drowns in Crete

    A 29-year-old American sailor was found dead this morning near the US military base at Souda Bay on the island of Crete. According to preliminary police reports, his death was due to drowning. The US marine was a member of the American auxiliary vessel, the "Gordon."

    [06] Israel kills senior Hamas commander in West Bank

    Israeli commandos killed a West Bank chief of the militant group Hamas in a raid today that could deal a blow to reformist Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas' battle for political survival. An Israeli soldier was also killed in the operation in the city of Nablus.

    [07] US drops plans to report Iran to the UN Security Council

    Washington has abandoned plans to report Iran to the UN Security Council for what it says are breaches of UN nuclear rules, despite worries that Tehran is secretly developing nuclear weapons. Diplomats said the United States realised there was little support for its draft resolution, as the case for declaring Iran in breach is far from clear-cut.

    [08] Protestors push back police lines at EU meeting

    Anti-globalisation protestors pushed back police lines guarding a lakeside conference centre, due to host a meeting of European Union foreign ministers this evening. About 400 activists shunted police in riot gear down the narrow streets of Riva del Garda, a town at the head of Lake Garda in northern Italy.
