    Within the framework of his visits to European capitals, Prime Minister Costas Simitis, who is currently presiding the EU, is visiting Portugal and Malta today.

    [03] First suspected SARS case in Greece

    The first suspected SARS case in Greece is being treated in a negative pressure chamber at Sismanoglio hospital, and tests are being carried out in order to ascertain the cause of the patient's illness. The patient, aged 22 is a flight attendant from South Africa working for a foreign airline, while she had recently travelled to Hong Kong. She arrived in Athens on May 11 and stayed at hotel in Athens. After she found out that she had temperature she was taken to hospital.

    From his side, in an interview with NET 105.8 Health Minister Costas Stephanis said that since the case had been isolated, there is no reason for concern. The case will be dealt with swiftly.

    Meanwhile, epidemiologist and professor Dimitris Trihopoulos told our station that the immediate mobilisation of the prevention mechanisms is a very good sign.

    At the same time, hospital doctors will go on a strike tomorrow, protesting thus to the lack of measures in combating SARS cases.

    Up to now, 560 people have died of SARS and more than 7,300 have been infected worldwide. In China the dead number 252, while in Hong Kong 218.

    [04] Education issue causes friction between ND & PASOK

    New Democracy party's intention to announce its Education programme one day before Lyceum exams was criticized by Education Minister Petros Efthymiou because according to him the announcement would cause psychological pressure to the students.

    Additionally, Mr Efthymiou criticized the New Democracy party of continuous experimentation on the sector of Education, adding that PASOK's positions on Education would be publicized after the end of the examinations. The New Democracy party has announced the abolishing of the examinations at second class Lyceum.

    From his side, New Democracy MP George Suflias called on the minister to study first New Democracy's programme that will be announced on Thursday and then criticize it.

    [05] Strong euro for the benefit of Europe and the world says Christodoulakis

    Following the Euro group conference in Brussels yesterday, Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis gave a press conference and said that a strong euro was not only for the benefit of the euro zone but also for the world economy.

    Additionally, he and the competent commissioner Pedro Solbes said stressed that following the end of geopolitical uncertainty and the fall of the oil prices, the European economy is expected to improve at the second half of 2003.

    [06] Graham Bins dies

    Culture Minister Evagelos Venizelos expressed his grief over the death of the Honorary President of the British Committee for the return of the Parthenon Marbles Graham Bins.

    Mr Venizelos underlined that Mr Bins had been a great Philhelene all his life and struggled for the return of the Marbles to Greece from the first moment.

    Renowned composer and singer Vagelis Perpiniades, who died at the age of 76, will be buried at the third cemetery today.
