    Mostly sunny on Monday around Greece, with only a chance of clouds in the north and west. Northerly winds on the Aegean, weak to moderate. The temperature in Athens will range from 16 to 34C and in Thessaloniki from 14 to 33C.

    [02] Measures for low incomes

    The government plans to take measures that will be implemented in autumn 2004 and will last until 2005, in order to support social classes with lower incomes, including pensioners and people with disabilities. The support measures for lower incomes are a priority for the government, but are not linked to political developments, said Deputy Minister of Finance G. Floridis to NET 105.8.

    Regarding part time employment, Deputy Minister of Labour Lefteris Jolas said that part time employees will be hired on the basis of social criteria, so as to help certain groups of people, while their employment agreement will last two years.

    [03] Karamanlis criticizes the government

    Main opposition New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis, on a tour of the Aegean island Limnos on Sunday, referred to Greek-Turkish relations, underlining that ''on the occasion of my presence here, I want to send to the neighbouring Turkish people a sincere message of peace and cooperation''.

    At the same time, Mr Karamanlis criticized the government by referring to the decay of the wider public sector and to the state that does not encourage development.

    Additionally, he stated that his party would fight corruption and bluntly said that his party would not accept any changes on the electoral law to be applied at prefectures.

    From its side, the Press Minister called on the main New Democracy opposition leader to abandon populism.

    [04] SARS kills five more in China

    In reply to the Chinese officials' optimistic stock of situation regarding the easing off of the spread of the SARS virus, the World Health Organisation reported that there is no evidence up to now that proves a drop of the number of SARS cases.

    Besides, in Beijing five more people lost their lives from SARS, while 69 new cases have been identified.

    Additionally, the SARS virus also spread to Finland and Macao, while in Taiwan a nurse died and 12 more people got infected from the SARS virus.

    In South Korea, an 80-year old American, who had been infected by SARS was placed under quarantine after his arrival at Seul airport. The National Health Institute of the country confined the 11 crew-members of the plane as well as the five passengers who were on board the plane and were sitting next to the American. This is the second possible SARS case discovered in South Korea.

    [05] Papadopoulos to take initiatives for the resumption of Cyprus talks

    The President of the Cyprus Republic Tasso Papadopulos stated that he would undertake initiatives for the resumption of the Cyprus talks on the basis of the Annan plan, so as the Cyprus issue is resolved.

    He also commented that the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots' stance had proved that they could live together and that the Turkish Cypriot representative Rauf Denkash's allegations were wrong. He also said that Turkey on the basis of Turkey's 'wrong' interests this country determines the developments in occupied Cyprus.

    Meanwhile, in reply to his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan' statements that in Cyprus there exist 'two equal states', Prime Minister Costas Simitis replied 'the Cyprus issue constitutes an issue of occupation by the Turkish army'.

    [06] EU Agriculture Ministers meeting takes place in Corfu

    The European Union Agricultural Ministers informal meeting is beginning in Corfu today, with the farmers' Trade Unions planning to protest for the revision of the Joint Agricultural Policy.

    [07] ATHENS 2004 tickets available as of today

    Tickets for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games will be available as of today, while a bi-ministerial meeting will be held today focusing on the progress of Olympic projects.

    Also, visiting the ATHENS 2004 headquarters today at the invitation of ATHOC President Gianna Angelopoulos - Daskalaki will be Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos, who has expressed his wish to join the ATHENS 2004 Volunteer Programme.
