[02] The EU discourages dispatch of Turkish troops to N Iraq

Discussions are being held in Ankara between American President George W. Bush's envoy and Turkish officials on the issue of the dispatch of Turkish troops to Iraq. At the same time, the Turkish arms chief stated that more Turkish troops would be sent to Northern Iraq only if additional 'dangers' arose.

The friction between the USA and Turkey seems to be caused by Washington's wish to put the Turkish troops under American and British command.

Meanwhile, EU commissioner responsible for the EU expansion Gunter Ferhoygen stressed that any Turkish intervention of the Turkish troops in Northern Iraq would be undesirable for the European Union, implying that Turkey's accession process to the EU would meet with difficulties.

At the same time, briefing the Parliamentary Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee, Foreign Minister George Papandreou addressed an appeal to Turkey to abstain from any military involvement in Iraq.

On a relative development, Iraq's dramatic developments will be discussed today at the Greek Parliament.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis briefed the European Parliament on the results of the Summit Meeting in Brussels.

He underlined that international legality should prevail through the United Nations, stressing that despite its differences, Europe constitutes the most important factor for the creation of a multi pole world.

[03] Soto briefs the UN about the Papadopoulos-Denktash talks

United Nations special envoy Alvaro De Soto briefed the five permanent member states of the United Nations yesterday on the latest discussions between the recent talks between the President of the Cyprus Republic Tasos Papadopoulos and the Turkish Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash. Mr Soto referred to Turkey and Denktash's refusal for referendums to be held in Cyprus on the basis of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan.

Mr Annan's report on the developments in Cyprus will be presented to the Security Council at the beginning of next week, while next week he will brief the Security Council plenary session.

Besides, a fresh demonstration will be held against Denktash in occupied Cyprus today.
