    Cloudy weather is forecast in all parts of the country with rain and storms in the Dodecanese and west. Rain is also likely to fall elsewhere, especially in Macedonia, Thrace and the northern and eastern Aegean. Winds south southwesterly, moderate to very strong. The temperature in Athens will range between 9C and 15C and in Thessaloniki from 7C to 10C.

    [02] Open air market sellers demand reforms

    The Finance Ministry has been surrounded by police forces since 06:00 local time to prevent open market sellers and producers from entering the ministry. Producers and sellers are on 24-hour strike and are demanding reforms in the legal framework of the operation of open-air markets.

    [03] ATHENS 2004 President to testify on issue of blackmails

    ATHENS 2004 President Gianna Angelopoulos &#8211; Daskalaki, who is briefing the German Chancellor Gerhardt Schroeder in Berlin on the preparation status of Olympic Projects, stated that she wishes to testify to the DA on anything she knows that is related to the issue of blackmails.

    In the meantime, it seems that the clergy had also been blackmailed despite the fact that Archbishop Chrystodoulos and the Holy Synod appeared ignorant. However, Metropolitan of Zakynthos Chrysostomos stated that he was ready to testify if he was asked to do so.

    [04] The Pedagogical Institute proposes reforms

    The Pedagogical Institute has proposed to the Ministry of Education radical changes that aim at reforming the 9-year compulsory education and the boosting of general education.

    The Institute is proposing new books, new teaching material, as well as new methods of teaching that put an end to learning lessons by heart.

    From his side, Deputy Education Minister Nikos Gesoulis stated to NET 105.8 radio station that the ministry would examine the proposals of the Pedagogical Institute and would take the final decisions.

    [05] ECOFIN approves Greece's stability programme

    An ECOFIN meeting in Brussels on Tuesday approved Greece's update stability and development programme for the period 2002-2006.

    Commenting the council's decision, Greek Economy and Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis - who chaired the meeting - said that ''everyone acknowledged the very significant progress made in the Greek economy and particularly its high growth rates.''

    The Greek minister stressed that ''for this reason, the council insisted that the same policy should be continued in the coming years giving more emphasis to a reduction of public debt, economic growth, increased competitiveness and new jobs.''

    Christodoulakis said that council's decision was equally significant for the promotion of structural reforms in the economy.

    Meanwhile, the EU Finance Commission decided that penalties should be inflicted to Germany for its excessive fiscal deficit and at the same time warmed France on the same issue.

    Finally, the New Democracy party criticized the government for its economic policy stating that the government cannot get rid of big interests and dependences.

    [06] No influenza epidemic broken out in Greece

    Commenting on the statements of European scientists on influenza, epidemiologist Marios Lazanas of the Research Centre of Special Infections stated that an influenza epidemic had not broken out in Greece.

    In a Press Conference that took place in Rotterdam, it was stressed that the repercussions of influenza on certain patients had been serious, while it was stressed that each annual outbreak of this illness causes a considerable increase of health expenses.
