Yesterday, the United Nations head of inspectors Hans Blix briefed the Greek government on the course of inspections in Iraq.Meanwhile, China, Germany and France that are members of the Security Council, called on Washington not to haste and declare war against Iraq, while France announced that it might veto any attack. The French Foreign Minister Dominique de Velpin stated that nothing justifies military action against Iraq. At the same time, a big anti war demonstration took place in Washington yesterday. From his side the American Secretary of State Colin Powell warned the Security Council not to avoid its responsibilities during its sessions on the disarming of Iraq the following week. On a relative development, Britain announced that it would send 30,000 more soldiers and armored vehicles to the Persian Gulf. Finally, the American and British Interior Ministers appeared to agree on the idea of offering asylum to the Iraqi President Saddam Housein if he agreed to leave his country. Specifically, during his visit to Patras yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Simitis accused the New Democracy party of trying to distort reality. (21/1/2003 11:13:00 ðì) [06] ECOFIN meets todayThe ECOFIN meeting being held in Brussels today under the presidency of Greek Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis is expected to approve five Stability and Development Programs submitted by Germany, France, Italy, Greece and Finland, as well as the Convergence Program submitted by Sweden.The revised program submitted by Greece will be approved in the meeting without difficulty. However, the “15” will repeat the criticism and remarks made by the European Commission mainly concerning public debt. One day before the ECOFIN meeting euro zone countries described the fiscal situation in Germany and France as extremely worrying, while discussions were held on the stability programmes of Greece, France, Germany, Italy and Finland. Finally, Mr Christodoulakis pointed out that the economic policy would continue, as well as the efforts for decreasing the fiscal deficit in Greece. He was underlined the need of initiatives that would help in dealing with the issue of the social security system within the framework of the recent reform in the Social Insurance Institute (IKA).
