[02] Alvaro De Soto begins new round of deliberations

United Nations special envoy Alvaro De Soto began a new circle of deliberations for the Cyprus issue in Ankara that will conclude in Athens and Nicosia, his next stops.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Committee of the Democratic Rally party approved the President of the Cyprus Republic Gafkos Clerides' candidacy for the coming presidential elections with a vast majority in Nicosia yesterday.

At the same time, in an interview with the BBC, the Turkish Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash described United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan unacceptable. On January 4, Mr Denktash presented the leaders of the Turkish Cypriot parties his proposals according to which a referendum should be carried out with the participation of settlers, who would decide to accept or reject the Annan plan, recognize two separate and equal states in Cyprus and decide on the measures that would stress the separation of the two communities.

On a relative development the President of the Hellenic Republic Costis Stephanopoulos appeared worried on the influence of the Turkish military establishment on Turkey's political developments and blamed Mr Denktash for the immobility prevailing in the Cyprus issue.
