    Cloud is forecast for most parts of the country on Thursday, while in the west and north, there may be local rains later in the day. Winds westerly, strong turning very strong. Scattered cloud in Athens with temperatures between 7C and 17C. Cloud and rain in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 6C to 15C.

    [02] Christodoulakis announces tax reforms

    According to information of NET 105.8 radio station, a 7.5% increase of the lump sum civil servants will get when they get their pension will be implemented from the government.

    The increase will be based on the basis of the salaries of the last five years of employment, while those who had been working at the civil service for more than 32 years will get a higher increase. In contrast, those with secondary education degrees and with less than 25 years of service will receive no increase.

    Additionally, according to Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis, 13 measures will be taken at tax offices that will improve the services offered to civilians.

    Mr Christodoulakis also left open the possibility for both spouses employed at the public sector to receive retrospectively the family allowance they are entitled to, pointing out that the issue will be discussed with the Civil Servants' board.

    From its side, the via its spokesman Theodoris Rousopoulos, the New Democracy party spoke of petty party and communications tricks on behalf of the government, asking at the same time the immediate payment of family allowances.

    Finally, the Body of Economic Crime provided the Finance Ministry with a list of the first 50 enterprises accused of unjustifiable price increases, so that checks are carried out by the responsible authorities.

    [03] Papandreou to tour the Middle East

    Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou will make a tour of seven Middle Eastern countries in early February in his capacity as chairman of the EU Council of Ministers.

    The agenda of his tour will be discussed extensively at the coming General Affairs Committee in Brussels on January 27.

    In an interview with the NET, Mr Papandreou stated that war could be averted, if the United Nations resolutions are implemented and unilateral acts are avoided. He also pointed out that the Iraqi President Sadam Husein should fully cooperate with the United Nations inspectors, so as to prove that Bagdad does not possess any arms of mass destruction.

    Meanwhile, commenting on a Wall Street Journal article that accuses him of anti-Americanism, the Speaker of the Greek Parliament said that the international community should react to the American conception of its universal dominion.
