The priorities of the Greek European Union Presidency will be presented at a Press Conference by Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Mr Romano Prodi.Mr Simitis' meetings with the Community's commissioners will be prepared at a Cabinet meeting scheduled to take place tomorrow. The Prime Minister stated via his associates that he is determined not only to promote Greece's national goals on a European level, but also all pending domestic issues. Today, the head of the Greek Cypriot side Alekos Markides is expected to clarify whether he will remain in his post as Attorney General. In an interview with NET 105.8 radio station, Mr Markides stressed that his decision to run for the Presidential elections constituted a golden opportunity for someone else to deal with the Cyprus issue. On a relative development, in an interview with the same radio station, the Speaker of t he Cypriot Parliament Dimitris Christofias disagreed with Mr Markides' decision to remain head of the Cypriot negotiating team. Finally, the Cypriot government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou maintained to NET 105.8 that Mr Markides' candidacy is not creating a problem since it constitutes a rallying candidacy.
