    Cloud is forecast for most parts of the country on Wednesday, while in the east and southeast, there may be local rains later in the day. Winds westerly, strong turning very strong. Scattered cloud in Athens with temperatures between 10C and 17C. Cloud and rain in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 10C to 14C.

    [02] Finance Minister to announce packet of economic measures

    Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis is to announce the first packet of measures in support of low income earners, people with special needs, farmers and small and medium sized enterprises at 13:00 local time.

    Mr Christodoulakis will also probably announce the way retrospective family allowances will be given to spouses.

    Finally, the priorities of the Greek European Union Presidency in the economic sector will be discussed at a meeting in which participating will be Prime Minister Costas Simitis, the Finance Minister and the governor of the Bank of Greece.

    [03] Greek EU Presidency's priorities to be presented at a Press Conference

    The Plenary Session of the European Committee, headed by Mr Romano Prodi is arriving in Athens tomorrow. The priorities of the Greek European Union Presidency will be presented at a Press Conference by Prime Minister Costas Simitis and Mr Romano Prodi.

    Mr Simitis' meetings with the Community's commissioners will be prepared at a Cabinet meeting scheduled to take place tomorrow.

    The Prime Minister stated via his associates that he is determined not only to promote Greece's national goals on a European level, but also all pending domestic issues.

    [04] Intensification of deliberations for the solution of the Cyprus issue

    Deliberations for the solution of the Cyprus issue are intensified amid the pre-electoral climate in Cyprus.

    According to information deriving from Cyprus, the United Nations is planning to submit a revised document with a new proposal regarding the territorial issue and the number of Greek and Turkish troops.

    Today, the head of the Greek Cypriot side Alekos Markides is expected to clarify whether he will remain in his post as Attorney General.

    In an interview with NET 105.8 radio station, Mr Markides stressed that his decision to run for the Presidential elections constituted a golden opportunity for someone else to deal with the Cyprus issue.

    On a relative development, in an interview with the same radio station, the Speaker of t he Cypriot Parliament Dimitris Christofias disagreed with Mr Markides' decision to remain head of the Cypriot negotiating team.

    Finally, the Cypriot government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou maintained to NET 105.8 that Mr Markides' candidacy is not creating a problem since it constitutes a rallying candidacy.
