(8/1/2003 10:51:00 рм) [04] Intensification of deliberations for the solution of the Cyprus issueDeliberations for the solution of the Cyprus issue are intensified amid the pre-electoral climate in Cyprus.According to information deriving from Cyprus, the United Nations is planning to submit a revised document with a new proposal regarding the territorial issue and the number of Greek and Turkish troops. Today, the head of the Greek Cypriot side Alekos Markides is expected to clarify whether he will remain in his post as Attorney General. In an interview with NET 105.8 radio station, Mr Markides stressed that his decision to run for the Presidential elections constituted a golden opportunity for someone else to deal with the Cyprus issue. On a relative development, in an interview with the same radio station, the Speaker of t he Cypriot Parliament Dimitris Christofias disagreed with Mr Markides' decision to remain head of the Cypriot negotiating team. Finally, the Cypriot government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou maintained to NET 105.8 that Mr Markides' candidacy is not creating a problem since it constitutes a rallying candidacy.
