    A cloudy day is forecast with rain and local storms. Winds northerly, strong to very strong, turning gale force locally in the Aegean. In Athens temperatures will range between 9C to 14C and in Thessaloniki between 5C to 10C.

    [02] Priorities of Greek EU Presidency

    Greece yesterday assumed the EU rotating presidency for the first half of 2003. The Greek presidency will formally open on January 10 in Athens in the presence of the European Committee members headed by its President Romano Prodi.

    Among the priorities of the Greek-EU Presidency is the signing of the admission accord following the block s enlargement with 10 new countries including Cyprus, the control of illegal immigration, the discussion of subjects related to social and labour aspects of economic immigrants living in the EU and the upgrading of EU international relations.

    In an interview with state television channel NET, Prime-minister Simitis said that he is scheduled to visit Cyprus on April 18, two days after the signing of the 10 new EU member states admission accord.

    The UN Secretary General special envoy, Alvaro de Sotto is expected to visit Cyprus on January 13 to discuss the next moves for the resolution of the Cyprus political problem. Before arriving in Cyprus he will visit the U.S, Ancara and Athens.

    In the meantime, Turkish-Cypriot leader, Raulf Dektash expressed objections to the UN Secretary General plan maintaining that it deprived Turkish-Cypriots of many of their rights..

    On his part, the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi expressed the belief that a resolution to the Cyprus issue could be found till February 28 stressing that the U.N plan observed the community s chart but needed some revisions

    [03] Military service reduced

    Obligatory military service has been reduced to 12 months in the army, 14 in the air force and 15 in the navy, for all those who will called to join in the armed forces as from January 1st, 2003.
