    A cloudy day is forecast with rain and local storms in the east and southern Aegean, improving later in the afternoon. Winds northwesterly, moderate turning locally strong. Temperatures in Athens will range between 8C and 15C and in Thessaloniki between 5C and 11C

    [02] Bad weather wave- caused intensive damage

    The wave of bad weather which hit the country yesterday has limited on the islands of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese while a ban on sailings from the ports of Pireus and Rafina has been lifted.

    The sudden heavy downpour in Athens yesterday, caused traffic disruption and the fire brigade was called in over 100 cases of uprooted trees damaging vehicles and blocking streets. Inbound traffic to Athens was heavy on national highways yesterday, as many holiday- makers returned to the city. In Xylocastro 3 people lost their lives and two were injured in a 6-car pile-up while in 2 other similar road accidents at Agioi Theodoroi a total of 28 vehicles were involved.

    Recent flash floods and mudslides have caused extensive damage to houses and business premises on the island of Kasos . Also serious damage was caused to the island s water supply system, telecommunications and roads. Special crews will arrive on the island today to assess damages.

    [03] Turkish-Cypriot leader banned rapprochement rally

    Ongoing demonstrations in the occupied part of Cyprus , protesting against Raulf Dektash handling of the Cyprus issue have annoyed the Turkish-Cypriot leader , who imposed a ban on yesterday s rally organised by Turkish-Cypriots in support of rapprochement and launched threats against all those who intended to participate. A similar demonstration was held in free Cyprus by the Akel youth organisation while Cyprus Defence Minister, Socratis Hasikos stressed that measures had been taken to prevent the crisis from spreading to the free parts of Cyprus.

    Recently elected Athens Mayor , Dora Bakoyianni, Attica hyper-prefect , Fofi Gennimata, and Attica and Pireus prefects , Giannis Sgouros and Yiannis Mihas are to be sworn in today to undertake their duties on January 1st.
