[04] Protests against Denkash escalate

Nicosia is expected to give its answer on United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's letter after New Year's Day and after the national council meets.

The Cypriot leadership reached that decision following Turkish – Cypriot Rauf Denktash's tactics of delay, according to whom the Annan plan should be examined since it does not satisfy the Turkish-Cypriots' interests.

Meanwhile, reactions in Northern Cyprus are escalating, with the Turkish-Cypriots demanding Mr Denktash's resignation. According to information, political parties and organizations have launched a campaign aiming at the greatest possible participation of the Turkish-Cypriots in Thursday's demonstration.

Today, a demonstration is taking place in occupied Morphou, while a group of Turkish-Cypriots is beginning a hunger strike demanding the solution of the Cyprus issue and peace on the island.
