[05] Deliberations for solution of the Cyprus issue must continue says Annan

In a letter sent to the Greek and Turkish leaders, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan expresses his intention to intensify his efforts for the solution of the Cyprus issue. Among others, he stresses that deliberations must continue on the basis of the revised plan and that there still time until February 28 for the problem to be solved.

At the same time, the Turkish Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash being provocative, has asked for the lifting of the Security Council resolution, on the basis of which Archbishop Makarios' government had been recognized in 1964 as the “sovereign government of the Cyprus Republic”.

From his side, the Foreign Minister George Papandreou was stating that if Denktash could not understand the seriousness of those historic moments, then history would surpass him. Meanwhile, the Turkish- Cypriots demonstrated in the occupied territories demanding the immediate of the signing of the agreement that would lead to the solution of the Cyprus issue.

Mr Papandreou from his side, expressed his satisfaction over Mr Annan's letter, while the political parties expressed Nicosia's readiness for deliberations.

Finally, the President of Turkey, Ahmet Necdet Sezer, has vetoed changes to the constitution which would allow the leader of the ruling party to become prime minister.

The Turkish parliament last week voted in favour of a series of constitutional amendments which would allow Recep Tayyip Erdogan to be elected to parliament and therefore become prime minister.

Mr Erdogan's Justice and Development (AK) Party, which has Islamic roots, won a landslide election victory last month.

But Mr Erdogan was banned from taking part in the poll because of a past conviction for inciting religious hatred.

Instead, party deputy Abdullah Gul has taken the prime minister's post.
