Storms are expected in the Aegean. Winds variable, very strong to gale force. In the north, temperatures will range from -1C to 4C in the Ionian and on the rest of the mainland from 4C to 9C and on the Aegean islands from 5C to 12C. Temperatures in Athens will range between 5C and 8C and in Thessaloniki from 0C to 4C.(19/12/2002 11:22:00 ðì) [02] Developments after Cyprus admission to the EUWithin the context of recent developments in the Cyprus issue , Ancara stated that it supported the continuation of negotiations based on the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan plan but quoting political and legal reasons rejected the E.U decision to admit Cyprus in the block. Ancara maintained that Brussels did not have the right to take unilateral decisions on the future of the island.In an announcement issued after a meeting attended by Turkey s President, Prime-minister , the chief of the Turkish armed forces and the Turkish –Cypriot leader, Raulf Dektash , Turkey expressed its support to the Turkish-Cypriot leader , refuting their responsibilities for the failure to reach an agreement at the EU summit in Copenhagen. Commenting on the announcement, Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou said that Turkey s positions had been rejected in the past by both reliable law circles and the E.U. In the meantime, the UN Security Council expressed its regret that the Turkish- Cypriot leadership had not responded in a timely way to the initiatives taken by the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. Late last night, called to comment by Pasok party eurodeputy, Giorgos Katiforis , EU Commissioner, responsible for enlargement, Gynter Ferhoihen , clarified that he had not linked Cyprus admission to the EU with the resolution of the island s political problem, underlining that the referendum to be held in the two communities was not referred to Cyprus admission to the E.U. (19/12/2002 11:23:00 ðì) [03] Prime-minister, Simitis press interview to foreign correspondentsIn an press interview to foreign correspondents, Prime-minister Simitis said that reduction of the armaments program which will come about with the resolution of the Cyprus political problem and the improvement of Greek-Turkish relations would contribute in the development of the economy and improvemnts in the sectors of health and education. He also said that elections will lead the Pasok party in the next parliamentary elections to be held in 2004 and ruled out a government reshuffle .In reference to the Cyprus issue , Mr. Simitis said that efforts will continue if progress in negotiations was noted till February 28. Mr Simitis also announced that political initiatives will be taken soon to improve daily life. (19/12/2002 11:24:00 ðì) [04] Inflation rate unchanged in NovemberAccording to Eurostat inflation rate in November remained unchanged at 3,9% while the Greek farmers income went up by 5,7% compared to farmers in other European countries where it went down by 3%(19/12/2002 11:25:00 ðì) [05] Indefinite strike by truck ownersTruck owners and drivers covering national and international routes are to launch an indefinte strike if their demands are not met in their meeting today with Economics undersecretary Apostolos Fotiadis.The drivers, including fuel transport workers, are seeking exemption from a retroactive check on company books.
