    [02] Crucial week for the Cyprus issue

    This is expected to be a crucial week for the Cyprus issue as the U.N will mount pressure on all sides to agree to start negotiations on the basis of the U.N peace plan till December 12.

    The U.N Sec. Gen , special envoy on Cyprus , Alvaro de Soto will have talks with Cyprus President, Glafkos Kleridis , while he will also visit Athens and Ancara for a new round of contacts within the context of efforts to achieve the opening of negotiations without a further delay.

    In the meantime, developments in the Cyprus issue , Cyprus E.U accession and Greek-Turkish relations will be the focus of talks during the Greek Foreign Minister s visits to London today and Washingthon tomorrow.

    The American State Department , special coordinator for Cyprus, Tomas Weston will visit Athens and Ancara . However, he has not scheduled a visit to Cyprus.

    Developments in the Cyprus issue will be the focus of talks during today s meeting of the Pasok party Executive Office.

    Meanwhile , the winner of the recent Turkish elections , Tayip Erdogan objected to the return of occupied territories to the Greek-Cypriots as provided by the U.N peace plan while Turksih Foreign Minister Rezep Tayip, after his meeting in N.Y with Turkish-Cypriot representative Raulf Dektash said that proposals on territorial issues needed improvement ,underlining that negotiations and acceptance of the U.N peace plan were two different subjects.

    [03] Council of Foreign Affairs and Defence meets today

    The Goverment Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence meets today to discuss the armed forces equipment program mounting to 2.2 billion euro.

    The N.D party spokesman , Thodoros Roussopoulos said that today s decisions will indicate whether the goverment served public intererest or was unable to resist the wants , pressures and orders of big businesses in which it had vested interests.

    Commenting ,goverment spokesman, Hristos Protopappas said that the N.D party fabricated shadows in national issues of major importance, wondering what was the main opposition s party special interest in the meeting of the Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence .

    [04] TV coverage of court trials banned

    The Justice Ministry next week will table a bill in the parliament providing for the ban of TV coverage of court trials. Justice Minister, Filippos Petsalnikos said that the bill aims to avert public humiliation of victims and the turn of important cases to virtual reality shows.

    [05] Strikes- IKA doctors, gas-station owners

    IKA doctors will treat only emergency cases today and tomorrow due to a 48 strike demanding the permanent contracts for 5.500 doctors under temporary contracts.

    Gas station owners are also staging a 24 hour strike in protest against the installation of cash registers. The Union of gas-station owners left open the possibility for further mobilisations.

    [06] Applications for houses in the Olympic Village

    The Organisation for Workers houses started accepting applications for the 2300 houses in the Olympic Village today. Applications can be submitted till May 25, 2003. The houses will be given in the second half of 2005 and are expected to house about 10 to 11 thousand workers.
