[02] Developments in investigations into November 17

Two brothers Hristodoulos and Vasilis Xiros and Dionisis Georgiadis ,were remanded in custody after being questioned last night. At least two more suspected members of the November 17 urban guerilla group are expected to be arrested today while Thomas Serifis charged with involvement in the group is likely to be interrogated by a public prosecutor today.

Yesterday Greek police charged Heraklis Kostaris and Konstantinos Karatsolis for crimes including the killing of British military attaché Stephen Saunders in Athens two years ago.

According to police spokesman , Lefteris Economou, Karatsolis admitted taking part in the heist of rockets from an army depot in Sykourio in 1989, robbing a post office and a cash delivery van and stealing guns from an Athens police station.

Kostaris, a relative of Thomas Sherifis, who denied charges, recruited Karatsolis to the guerilla group and is also charged with the killing of conservative deputy Pavlos Bakoyiannis in 1989 and the son of ship owner Peratikos.

Since a roundup of November 17 members started last week a total of 8 suspects have been charged including the group s alleged leader and chief ideologue Alexandros Giotopoulos.

The police operation burst into life three weeks ago when a bomb exploded prematurely in the hands of November 17suspect Savvas Xiros , who is being questioned by the police.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister, Philippos Petsalnikos gave assurances yesterday that all those responsible for terrorist activities in Greece will face charges in court and clarified that with the new legislation there will be no question of any offences being written off due to the lapse of time as participation in terrorist activities is considered to be a continuing crime. He also ruled out the possibility that any of those charged will be extradited to other countries.

[04] American ambassador in Athens says long procedure for the dismantling of the November 17 guerilla group

American ambassador to Athens Tomas Miller in his statements at a dinner he hosted after the conclusion of the 80th annual congress of the AHEPA organisation said that the dismantling of the November 17, the most hatred and treacherous guerilla organisation in Europe has begun.

However, Mr. Miller stressed that patience was necessary as the dismantling of the terrorist guerilla group was a long procedure which could not be limited to the interrogation and arrests of suspects adding that Greece as the U.S respects the laws and conviction of terrorists should be in accordance to the legislation.
