" Those who seek to lead the country to early elections will be belied " said Prime Minister Simitis and underlined that the government is promoting reforms to put in order the radio and television landscape. Earlier, Government spokesman Christos Protopapas announced a series of interventions for the orderly operation of radio and television media. Mr. Protopapas said that order will prevail fully in the radio and television field, within 2002, with regard to the grant of permits to radio stations and television channels. [03] Farmers continue protestingAgriculture Minister George Drys will meet representatives of the farmers today at 2 p.m. The farmers however, continue blocking roads symbolically today, while the municipalities of northeastern Greece will remain closed today in solidarity to the farmers.[04] The State Legal Council rejects permanent positions for contract workersThe plenum State Legal Council today rejected a proposal for making permanent employees 179 contract workers of the National Road Construction Fund. Interior Minister Kostas Skandalidis pledged that an announcement for hiring employees will take place again in order to ensure that the 170 contract workers of the Fund will be hired again.[05] IKA doctors go on strikeThe doctors of IKA (the Social Security Fund) announced that they will go on strike tomorrow until next Tuesday in all the polyclinics of IKA.Doctors demand that 5,500 contract workers of IKA become permanent employees, salary raises and better medical care conditions in the Social Security Fund. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance announced raises of up to 3.5% to pensioners of almost all the Social Security Funds (IKA, TEVE, DEI, ISAP and Banks), while for the Farmers Social Security Fund (OGA) a 5,000 drachma increase and a 5% increase to allowances for people with special needs. [06] TEI s remain closedThe Technical Education Institutes (TEI s) in Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki, Patra and Larisa will remain closed until Friday, as the teachers decided to continue their protest actions since they disagree with the new system of merit evaluation.[07] The Greek PM visits RomaniaPrime Minister Kostas Simitis will pay a working visit to Romania today, at the head of a government delegation.Mr. Simitis talks in Bucharest will focus on the situation in the Balkans and Romania s prospects for accession to the European Union and NATO. [08] The Greek and Turkish FM will hold talks on Greek - Turkish dialogueThe Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey, George Papandreou and Ismail Cem, will meet in Constantinople on February 12 to finalize the framework of the exploratory contacts pertaining to the Greek-Turkish dialogue.The two officials will hold talks on the sidelines of the EU Foreign Ministers Council meeting with their counterparts of the Islamic Conference. [09] ND party leader asks Britain to return the Parthenon marblesOpposition New Democracy (ND) party leader Kostas Karamanlis who is on a visit to London requested the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.Mr. Karamanlis had contacts with state officials and also with the Greek ship-owners lobby. Kouvelis will lead the movement ''Another Athens''Former Minister and deputy of the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress, Fotis Kouvelis, will be at the head of the ballot paper of the movement "Another Athens", for the municipal elections in the Greek capital.[11] Appointments for the Parliamentary Assembly of EuropeThe ruling PASOK party appointed Paraskevas Avgerinos as its representative and the leader of the Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress party Nikos Konstantopoulos as its alternate representative to the Parliamentary Assembly of Europe that will deal with the EU s institutional reforms.The opposition ND party has not yet announced the names of its representatives. [12] Athens Stock ExchangeLosses were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange on Monday.The general index dropped by 0.26%, closing at 2,588.98 points, while the volume of transactions was at 103 million Euro.
