[04] Earthquake hits TurkeyAn earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale shook Afyon Karahisar, Turkey yesterday, resulting in the death of 45 people and the injury of about 200 people. At the same time hundreds of people were left homeless due to the damages their houses suffered.Anatolia News Agency reported that Greece was the first country to offer aid. At the same time, Greek and Turkish seismologists stated that Greeks should not worry, since yesterday's earthquake was not related to the North Anatolian fault that could cause seismic activity in Northern Aegean. [06] Papandreou agrees in carrying out exploratory meetings with TurkeyOn the sidelines of the sessions of the World Economic Forum being held in New York, Foreign Minister George Papandreou conveyed to his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem, Athens' decision to begin a series of exploratory meetings between the two countries' foreign ministries.Mr. Papandreou pointed out that the dialogue should be held within the framework of International Law and the decisions reached in Helsinki. The two ministers decided to encourage the contiuation of the discussions between Klerides and Denktash, agreeing to meet again in Constaninople on 12 and 13 February. [07] Stephanopoulos ends his visit to SyriaThe President of the Hellenic Republic Costis Stephanopoulos is ending his visit to Syria today. During his meeting with his Syrian counterpart Bashar Al Asad, Mr. Stephanopoulos expressed the conviction that his visit to Syria would signal the beginning of a closer and more productive cooperation between Athens and Damascus. Both men agreed on the need of implementation of International Law and United Nations resolutions for the Cyprus issue and the Middle East.On Sunday morning, President Kostis Stephanopoulos attended a church service and met with the Patriarch of Antioch Ignatios. President Stephanopoulos exchanged gifts with Ignatios who told him "God and people should love you a great deal to be in a position to exercise power appropriately." Later in the day, President Stephanopoulos held private meetings with Syria's first Vice President Hadam, Prime Minister Miro and the Parliament president with whom he discussed bilateral issues and the Middle East question.
