    [01] Weather forecast

    Sunny weather is forecast in most parts of the country today, with cloud on the mainland from evening. Showers are likely in the eastern and southern islands during the morning. Winds north-northwesterly, light to moderate. Sunny in Athens, with temperatures between 22C and 31C. Same in Thessaloniki, with temperatures from 19C to 28C.

    [02] Prime-minister Simitis announce measures to assist low income groups

    Prime-minister Kostas Simitis will today announce a package of 17-measures to assist low-income groups and incentives to boost private businesses. The total cost of the new measures mounts to 1,4 trillion drs for the period 2002-2004 and concerns mainly farmers, the unemployed, civil servants, pensioners and the low income groups.

    Mr. Simitis will analytically refer to the new measures in his speech at the opening of the International Thessaloniki Fair. The inner cabinet met today to approve the government's economic policy for the coming 3-year period.

    In the meantime Primeminister Kostas Simitis intends to open the dialogue on the social security issue after the Panhellenic meeting of the General Confederation of Greek Workers GSEE-on September, 26.

    [03] Public Works Minister, stands for election as Pasok party's Secretary.

    In an interview published in the daily newspaper, "Ta Nea", Public Works Minister, Kostas Laliotis revealed his intention to stand for election as the ruling Pasok partys Secretary, at the upcoming October congress. Initial reactions by senior party officials have all been very positive, with the Government Spokesman, Dimitris Reppas saying the Prime-minister, Kostas Simitis was pleased with the ministers initiative.

    ND party President, Kostas Karamanlis met today with the 6-ND party coordinators on social issues .

    [04] The Government remains firm on its decision to exclude religious affiliation on ID's.

    Following his meeting with a Holy Synod Committee this morning, Education Minister, Petros Efthimiou reitarated that the government remained firm in its position that it would be unconstitutional for religious beliefs to be noted on ID's.

    The names of those admitted to tertiary education, through the new admission system are expected to have been announced by Monday.

    [05] Krambis led to Korydallos prison

    Panagiotis Krambis, charged with the murder of businessman Giorgos Nikolaidis and his friend Soula Kalthaki and a number of economic crimes has been led to the Korydallos prison under strict security measures.

    Speaking to reporters Krambis did not deny participation in the case but insisted he had evidence to prove he had no involvement in the murder. Krambis will stand trial in January 2002.

    [06] Public Prosecutor to examine the files of the two-dead, treated with anti-cholesterol drugs.

    The National Drug Organisation today handed to the Public Prosecutor the files related to the death of the two patients treated with the anticholesterol drugs to decide on whether to attribute penal responsibilities and sanctions on both doctors and the pharmaceutical companies who did not brief the organisation on the side effects of the drugs .

    [07] Foreign Minister Giorge Papandreou will meet with Cyprus political and state leadership during his two-day visit to Cyprus

    [08] OTE President and Board to be elected directly by the company's share-holders.

    In an extraordinary meeting today, the Greek Telecommunications Company-OTE , share-holders will vote on the companys new chart according to which the President and the Board will be directly elected by the Company's share-holders and not appointed by the government as the public sector now holds less than 51% of the companys shares.

    [09] Hermes Expo held in Atlantic City

    A conference on Greece's role in backing peace, security and prosperity for Europe and the US will be held on the weekend of October 20-21 in Atlantic City as part of the Hermes Expo international trade fair.In addition, Greek companies taking part in the fair will hold presentations of their products.

    [10] Stock Market

    The general price index on the Athens stock market dropped by 1.05% yesterday to close at 2733 points. The volume of trading was sluggish, hovering at around 36 billion drs.

    [11] No end in ME violence

    A Palestinian suicide bomber disguised as a bearded ultra-Orthodox Jew blew himself up in West Jerusalem today, wounding 13 people, after police stopped him on the pavement for questioning.

    The incident coincided with efforts by Xavier Solana, the European Union foreign policy Chief, to arrange talks between Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. Solana was to meet Arafat in the Gaza Strip later in the day.

    In the meantime the 117 thousand members of Israel's Labour Party will today elect the new President of the party after the resignation of Ehud Barac former Israeli Prime-minister who was defeated in Februarys elections by todays Prime minister and leader of the Likud party, Ariel Sharon.

    [12] Hewlett Packard bought over Compaq Computer

    Hewlett Packard Co., the second largest computer production company, has bought over Compaq Computer for 25 billion dollars with the plan to create a company whose sales will be as high as the IBM company's.
