    [01] Ban of departure of ships

    There has been a ban for the departure of passenger ships from the ports of Pireaus and Rafina heading to the Aegean islands this morning due to the gale force winds blowing in the sea.

    [02] Measures for the quake-stricken inhabitants of Skyros

    The Environment ministry is taking a series of measures in order to restore life to normal following the recent earthquake that hit the island of Skyros. Specifically, the quake-stricken people will receive a rent-subsidy, buildings will be restored, the water supply system will be repaired and measures will be taken to prevent any further landslides from the castle of the island.

    [03] Simitis ends series of meetings with ministers

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis is meeting with the Education minister Petros Efthymiou today, ending thus a series of meetings before the PASOK party congress. In the meantime, following their successive meetings with the Prime Minister yesterday, National Defence minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos and PASOK party deputy Evagelos Yannopoulos said that PASOKs course to the congress would be normal. Earlier, the ministers of Development and Labour had visited the Maximos mansion. On Thursday, the Prime Minister is leaving for Skyros, where he will spend his summer vacations.

    [04] Karamanlis launches an attack to the government

    Addressing the meeting of the New Democracy party Continuous Committee of Public Administration yesterday, the party leader Kostas Karamanlis launched an attack to the government, maintaining that being on the last stage of degradation, PASOK party had become arrogant.

    [05] Fuel prices to go up as of midnight

    Development minister Nikos Christodoulakis critisized the profiteering taking place in remote and tourist areas of Greece as regards the prices of fuel, asking all consumers to report such phenomena and underlining that such a conduct defamed Greece. In the meantime, fuel prices will increase as of midnight with the price of petrol going up by 3 drachmas per litre.

    [06] Same pensions for men and womens says the E.C.

    The Greek government will have to comply with the European Community directive according to which men and women will have to receive the same pension, a development that will lead to the increase of the age limit for future-women pensioners employed at public utilities, Banks and the Civil Service.

    [07] Deadline for the legalization of economic immigrants nears

    The deadline for submitting applications on the legalizing of economic immigrants is on August 2nd. All other relative documents can be turned in to their municipalities and communities until September 7th.

    Internal minister Vaso Papandreoou stated that because there have been some delays in the turning in of the relevant justifying documents, an extension has been given until the 7th of September. However she pointed out that the extension is not for the entire file, just the justifying documents.

    [08] Vartholomeos to visit Nisiros

    Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos is paying a visit to the island of Nisiros in the weekend in order to be present at the celebrations organized to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the establishment of the Monastery of Panayia Spiliani on the island.

    [09] Spartakos dies

    Composer, music conductor and pianist Yiannis Spartakos died at the age of 87 yesterday.
