  • [01] The government's battle against corruption is a battle for democracy, gov't VP Dragasakis says

    The government's battle against corruption is a battle for democracy, collective interest and the new social ethos of the post-memorandum Greece, Government Vice-President Yiannis Dragasakis said in his address to the conference "Structural reforms to combat corruption-technical assistance programme from the OECD "organized by the General Secretariat in combating corruption.

    Dragasakis said that for the government tackling corruption is a top political goal for the recovery of public interest.

    "For us, the battle against corruption is battle for democracy, the collective interest and the new social ethos of post-memorandum Greece," Dragasakis said.

    "Corruption is a demonstration of problems benefited from a state of deregulation and extreme individualism as a result of neoliberalism," he said and noted that "the fight against corruption is a fight for the recovery of public interest that is at the heart of government policy," a battle for the current government is a constant battle with zero tolerance towards corruption phenomena.

    [02] Exit from crisis will come through private investments, says Econ. Minister Stathakis

    "The exit from the crisis will come through private investments and enterprises with extroversion and international presence in sectors and activities that develop Greek economy's significant advantages on manpower dynamic as well as the huge perspective offered for exports and the strong presence of important sectors as agrinutrition and new technologies, in the international economy, stated Economy Minister George Stathakis on Wednesday.

    Stathakis inaugurated on Wednesday the new facilities of DHL Express at Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" in the presence of the managing director of DHL Greece, Malta and Cyprus Lefteris Samaras and of CEO of DHL Express Europe John Pearson.

    The Greek minister welcomed the new investment as a tangible example of trust into the prospects of the Greek economy and its potential to return on the path of sustainable growth.

    Finally, he pledged that the government will continue to safeguard that higher possible funds for investments either from european programmes or through legislation as well as with continuous interventions for the upgrading of the business environment.

    [03] Greek banks further reduce borrowing from ELA

    Greek banks further reduced their borrowing from the Emergency Lending Assistance mechanism ELA after the governing council of the European Central Bank approved a request made by the Bank of Greece to lower the borrowing ceiling by 100 million euros to 51.8 billion euros, up to and including Thursday, 20 October 2016.

    The reduction of 0.1 billion euros in the ceiling reflects an improvement of the liquidity situation of Greek banks, amid a reduction of uncertainty and the stabilization of private sector deposits flows.

    [04] Planes to be grounded on Oct 9-13 due to air traffic controllers' strike

    Flights to and from all Greek airports have been cancelled from October 9 to October 13 due to 24-hour repeated strikes called by air traffic controllers.

    Air traffic controllers are protesting against a bill on the restructuring of the civil aviation tabled in Parliament late on Tuesday.

    According to the air traffic controllers' union, the strikes will start at 00:01 and end at 23:59.
