  • [01] Europol's role could not be more central, EU Commissioner Avramopoulos says

Europol's role in this security environment could not be more central, EU Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said in a message to Europol by for the 100th Management Board meeting.

"The threats to the security of our citizens are constantly changing, evolving, multiplying. They are becoming more varied and more transnational. Terrorism has scarred the history of Europe in 2015 and 2016. It has shown the increased need to work together, better collect and share information and trust each other more," he underlined.

"And not only for terrorism. Organised crime; the drugs trade; cyber-criminality: they all affect the lives of our citizens and destabilise our societies – and require a joint approach. Over the years, it has earned the trust and recognition of EU institutions, Member States and the European citizens themselves," Avramopoulos stressed adding that it has become an established partner with unique capabilities in coordination and analytics.

"Europol has become the very nerve centre of our common work on security in Europe," the Greek Commissioner noted.

[02] International conference on Greek literature in Cairo

The strong and historic ties of the Greek and Egyptian civilisations highlights the 2nd international conference on Greek literature that will be held in Cairo organised by the School of Languages and Translation of the University Al Ahzar in Cairo.

Noted professors from Greece and Egypt as well as other scientists will address the meeting.

The two-day conference will open on October 11.

[03] Energy minister to attend IGB pipeline event in Sofia

Energy Minister Panos Skourletis will visit Sofia on Wednesday to participate in the market test procedure for the Gas Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB Pipeline), which is underway.

Skourletis will meet his Bulgarian counterpart Temenuzhka Petkova, and will then speak at the event. The two ministers will also hold a joint press conference.

[04] Online booking of travel packages up 75 pct

Online booking of travel packages recorded a 75 percent increase in the nine months of 2016 compared with the same period last year, according to the latest figures of the Greek travel agency 'Travel Plan.'

This is due to the fact that vacation packages provide very competitive rates and services compared to individual bookings.

A lot of Greeks are expected to travel in the long weekend of October 28-30 with Rome and London among the top choices, the travel agency said.

The new European directive that passed last October in the European Parliament plenary played an important role in Greek travellers' turn to online vacation packages.
