  • [01] PM Alexis Tsipras attends session of Youth Parliament

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras attended the 2016 session of Greece's annual 'Youth Parliament', which concluded on Monday. The prime minister was given an enthusiastic welcome by the teenage "MPs", who welcomed the opportunity to meet him and talk to him about the issues that concern young people, while many also seized the opportunity to take a selfie with him on his visit.

The closing session was also attended by Parliament President Nikos Voutsis, Democratic Alliance President Fofi Gennimata, Potami leader Stavros Theodorakis and the head of the Centrists' Union party Vasilis Leventis, as well as Education Minister Nikos Filis and Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos.

The annual 'Youth Parliament' is an educational programme organised by the Hellenic Parliament since the 1995-1996 school year open to all high-school children throughout the country and in Cyprus, as well as Greek expatriates.

[02] Europe's crisis one of values not economics, President Pavlopoulos says in Nicosia

The crisis in the European Union is one of values, not economics, President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos said on Monday in Nicosia.

"Europe has distanced itself from ...those [humanist] values and principles, which after WWII led to the effort to create Europe," he said, addressing a ceremony twinning the Elpida Foundation for children with cancer on Cyprus and its counterpart in Greece, during which the two organisations signed a protocol of cooperation.

Pavlopoulos referred to the tireless effort begun 26 years ago in Greece and Cyprus, by brave women such as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Marianna Vardinoyannis, to set up the Elpida Foundation for children with cancer, which he said was "a jewel for the social state."

Noting that the twinning of the two organisations was an important example of union at a critical time for Greece, Cyprus and the world, Pavlopoulos wished the effort every success.

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades thanked Pavlopoulos for attending the event and said it signalled the determination of the Greek and Cypriot states to contribute as much as possible to ensuring the success of its goal and purpose, which was to increase hope and the efforts to help children with cancer and leukaemia.

Vardinoyannis said the twinning of the two foundations will open up new avenues for assisting children with cancer.
