  • [01] PMTsipras: Greece and France share common values

    "Your visit to Greece, following the visit of President Hollande at the end of last year, confirms the very close working relationship and mutual understanding between our countries," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday said welcoming his French counterpart Manuel Valls at the Maximos Mansion.

    "Greece and France share common values and many times in our common European course we have defended the democratic acquis of our people and the vision for a Europe of social cohesion," he underlined and added that "we continue this common history, this common course, until today."

    The French government supported Greece in very difficult times last summer, and that is something we must all recognize, Tsipras noted.

    On his part, the French Prime Minister said that "if we supported Greece to stay in the eurozone and if we supported the courageous reforms it was because Greece is in the heart of Europe." Valls also referred to the history and the role of Greece in Europe.

    "Greece is necessary both for France and Europe," he stressed and expressed the hope that the next period will be a period of growth, hope and employment for all the Greeks. "We have to jointly consider the future of Europe and the issue of refugees where Greece is at the forefront, and France provides its solidarity are jointly build a model of growth with respect to rights," Valls stated.

    [02] FinMin Tsakalotos meets with French counterpart Sapin

    Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos pointed out the need for major structural changes in the state and the combating of corruption and tax evasion after his meeting on Friday with visiting French Finance Minister Michel Sapin.

    According to Tsakalotos, if these are achieved we will have a different Greece that will be in a position to get into the foreign markets and growth will return. Moreover, there will be a feeling of justice that the benefits of growth will be allocated to everyone.

    The Greek minister underlined that his discussion with Sapin focused on the new period and a growth agenda with social justice.

    On his part, Sapin said he believes that a new period starts for Greece "I do not say that the difficulties are over. The effort must continue. We are now entering a new period, a period of financial growth, a period of investments with new job positions and this will be achieved through a modern economy, with a modern state in order for Greece to have the position it deserves in Europe an in the eurozone," he stated.

    [03] State Department report on terrorism praises FM Kotzias' support to countering ISIL

    Greek government cooperation with the United States on counterterrorism remained strong. Senior Greek government leaders have emphasized that counterterrorism is one of their top priorities, the State Department said in a report on terrorism 2015.

    "Greek Foreign Minister Kotzias has steadily and publicly voiced support for countering ISIL and condemned its actions. Greece is sensitive to the dangers of radicalization and engages regional partners on the matter. In October, Kotzias hosted a widely-attended International Conference in Athens on "Religious and Cultural Pluralism and Peaceful Coexistence in the Middle East," it added.

    [04] 52,487 identified migrants and refugees in Greece on Friday

    52,487 identified refugees and migrants were on the Greek territory on Friday including 152 persons that arrived on the Greek islands in the last 24 hours.

    According to the Refugee Crisis Management Coordination Body's figures, 26,855 of the refugees are in northern Greece, 14,554 are hosted in the region of Attica, 8,515 on the Greek islands and 2,563 are hosted in different areas in central and southern Greece.

    [05] Three persons dead in new migrants boat tragedy south of Crete

    The bodies of three migrants have been recovered while 302 have been rescued south of Crete on Friday when the wooden sailing boat they were on board started sinking early in the morning.

    The sailing boat, which according to sources carried approximately 600 migrants and refugees sent an SOS while sailing in Egypt's waters. The Egyptian informed the Greek authorities and two Coast Guard vessels, five ships that were sailing nearby and a Greek airforce Super Puma helicopter rushed to the area.
