  • [01] Tsipras to Abbas: 'Resolution of the Palestinian issue is key for peace in region'

A resolution to the Palestinian issue is "key" for peaceful developments in the Middle East, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said as he welcomed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at Maximos Mansion on Monday, noting that Palestinians are a nation "that is fighting to find justice … and whose struggle has touched and motivated struggles worldwide."

"Unfortunately, we live at a time when our region is surrounded by negative developments, great instability, wars, interventions, and growth of terrorist organizations and terrorist attacks," Tsipras said. "This is why it is perhaps more crucial and more important than ever to highlight the need for cooperation, for finding peaceful solutions to the problems."

He clarified that Greece commits to actively promote a two-state solution that "guarantees the establishment of a viable, territorially unified, independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the basis of the 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as its capital and which will coexist in peace and security with Israel."

Tsipras also called for an immediate end the expansion of Israeli settlements and respect for the historical status quo of the holy sites. The two sides also discussed Greece's decision to use the term "Palestine" by the entire Greek public administration, an action and message with special symbolism and that from now on, all public documents will use the term "Palestine" rather than the term "Palestinian Authority".

He also said that Greece wants to play a constructive role in this direction being a stable country in the wider region, but also as a traditional friend of Palestine and the Arab world and with its close relations and cooperation with Israel. "Therefore Greece can play this role of a bridge in the direction of a just and viable solution to the Palestine issue," the premier said and added "we give new impetus to the resolution of the Palestinian issue".

Completing his remarks, Tsipras noted the two sides jointly condemned terrorism and stressed the need to start a credible peace process with a clear political horizon.

On his side, Abbas expressed his belief that Greece can play a critical role in resolving the issue and thanked Tsipras for meeting many times with him in the past months. "I consider myself most fortunate for meeting with you four times within this period. But this reflects the depth of our relationship and mutual trust between the two sides," the Palestinian leader said.

"Our people and our land need to be defended by the international community in order to have peace and democracy, like other people do," Abbas continued. "This is the last chance to have peace in the region and a resolution of the Palestinian issue," he added.

The Palestinian leader also spoke of the historic ties between the two countries and the common elements that bind them together and noted that Tsipras has gone into the substance of the problem when he said that the Palestinian issue has to be resolved first in order to resolve other problems.

"So if the Palestinian issue is resolved, then the problem of terrorism that surrounds us all will also be resolved. We are in favor of combating terrorism; we are in favor of peaceful resolution and political settlement of all the problems we are seeing in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere," Abbas told Tsipras.

The Palestinian leader finally noted that as Palestine has good relations with Greece and Greece has good relations with Israel, the country could play an important political role between the two sides. "You have the sincere intention, determination and ability to play such a role."

[02] Fifteen Nobel laureates sign petition urging EU, US to help Greece recover

Fifteen Nobel laureates have co-signed a petition urging European authorities as well as the United States to help Greece recover from the financial crisis and return to growth, in an activity initiated by Dr. Harald zur Hausen, who won the Nobel in Physiology or Medicine in 2008.

In their petition, addressed to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the European Parliament Martin Schulz, the signatories note that Greece had suffered from a deep, continuous economic crisis which has impacted negatively the lives of Greeks, the country's infrastructure and its future, as well as its research centers and universities.

"In these difficult times, the people, whose country is the cradle of European culture, should be supported with respect for what they have offered to culture and civilization and for what they can offer with their human potential," the petition reads.

"The real problem in Greece is not the deficit but the mechanisms of creating deficit and debt. The remedy, obviously, is proper EC policy management, measures and proper use of the excellent human potential working at the Universities and Research Centers of the country," it continued.

The 25 professors also state that Greeks are hard workers, innovative and creative and that the country possesses strong research institutions and excellent human potential. "It is unfair that the best part of human resources, ie, the young well-trained people move massively to other countries for a better future, thus strengthening other countries and weakening their own and options foe recovery," they said.

The letter concludes with a plea to release funds for universities and research institutions noting that austerity has been hard on the citizens and the academia and "cannot lead anywhere."

"Measures and policies should contain the parameter of development or else they are ineffective, prohibit progress and result in further recession," the 15 Nobel-prize winners said.

In the letter accompanying the petition to Alternate Minister for Research and Innovation, Costas Fotakis, the distinguished professors say they hope this action will help Greece in the decisions being taken by European leadership and give the country the opportunity to recover. "The excellent human potential of Greece in science and technology can be the catalyst for growth and prosperity," they note.
