ANA-MPA -- The Public Power Corporation's (PPC) transmitter company
appealed to Santorini residents and visitors on Wednesday to restrict
their use of electricity until the system is fully restored.
Power went off on the popular tourist destination and its neighbouring
islet Thirasia, when a fire in the PPC's main unit caused a blackout on
Tuesday. A shipment of power generators and a crane to install them were
expected on Wednesday from Piraeus, Rhodes, Crete and Paros.
Some power supply was restored on Tuesday evening, while PPC and the
municipality of Thera announced that "power will be restored to most of
the island by evening." They also said that dialysis patients will be
transferred to Crete temporarily, while the island's health centre is
providing oxygen to those in need and dealing with emergency cases.
PPC technicians and experts were flown in to help and to look for what
caused the fire.
