  • [01] 28 year-old confesses homicide

AMNA--A 28-year-old local man turned up at the Artemida (Athens eastern coastal town) police station on Friday and confessed the killing of a 20-year-old Romanian.

The suspect said to police that last Sunday, inside his father's woodshop, he stabbed the Romanian in the back with a knife and afterwards dug a hole in an adjacent lot, where he buried the victim and then covered the area with cement.amna

The victim's father had reported his son's disappearance and was pressing the 28-year old to tell him what had happened because he knew that the two of them were friends.

The victim's father also went to the woodshop where his son had been employed, saw the fresh cement and started to dig it up with a drill, at which time the perpetrator decided to give himself up and early in the morning he went to the police station, confessed the crime and took policemen to the spot where he had buried the victim.amna

The perpetrator claims that the victim, who had a police record for drug dealing and addiction, was pressing him to take drugs. The night that the crime was committed the two of them had an argument and according to the 28-year-old's testimony he stabbed the victim four times in the back, resulting in his fatal injury.

A case file is currently being drawn up and afterwards the suspect will be sent before a prosecutor.

[02] Unilever formalizes investment initiative in Greece

AMNA--The multinational consumer goods company Unilever on Friday formalized an investment initiative to begin production of its products in Greece, thus generating new jobs, during a meeting of Unilever executives with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Development Minister Costis Hadzidakis at the premier's office in the Maximos Mansion (government headquarters).

Hatzidakis welcomed that initiative as a "vote of confidence" in the Greek economy, with the creation of thousands of new jobs, stressing that the government will continue with similar efforts aiming at growth.

In this context, Samaras will be going to Qatar on November 27, while visits to China and Russia are also planned with the intention of attracting investors.amna

The Unilever initiative comes on the heels of an agreement between Hewlett-Packard, Cosco and TrainOSE to use Cosco's cargo terminal at the port of Piraeus as a hub for the distribution of the electronics giant's produces to central Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and eastern Europe, which was presented to the Greek premier on Wednesday by HP's senior vice-president Tony Prophet and Cosco CEO Capt. Fu Cheng Qui. According to initial estimates, the agreement can increase local volume by 50 percent for the port and create hundreds of new jobs.

The British-Dutch dual-listed firm Unilever announced on Tuesday its intention to produce 110 of its products that are currently imported to Greece from elsewhere in Europe in Greece itself, covering the needs of the domestic market and transforming its local subsidiary Elais-Unilever Hellas into a strategic arm of the multinational group.amna

The 110 products will not be produced by Unilever's Greek plants but will outsourced to other Greek companies.amna

The initiative is expected to increase Unilever's turnover from domestic production to 60 percent in 2013 from the current 55 percent. Unilever-Hellas currently exports products to 19 countries, with a turnover of 30 million euros, accounting for 7.5 percent of its total turnover.
