[01] Cabbies continue protests over liberalisation
(ANA-MPA) -- Striking taxi owners from the nearby major western Greece
port city of Patras and the prefecture of Aetoloakarnania, across the
Gulf of Patras in west-central Greece, lined up their vehicles in front
of the imposing Rio-Antirrio span bridge (south end) on Wednesday, 20
July 2011. Taxi cab owners around the country are demanding that the
government take back a law fully liberalising the sector, which
essentially means that any citizen in good standing can apply for a
taxi license. Although earlier industrial actions by the cab owners
targetted main ports and airports, angry reactions by tourism sector
professionals this past week curbed the more extreme forms of strike
actions. ANA-MPA / YIOTA KORBAKI
